Publisher's Summary

In The Mastery of Love, don Miguel Ruiz illuminates the fear-based beliefs and assumptions that undermine love and lead to suffering and drama in our relationships. Using insightful stories to bring his message to life, Ruiz shows us how to heal our emotional wounds, recover the freedom and joy that are our birthright, and restore the spirit of playfulness that is vital to loving relationships.

In the Toltec tradition, three fundamental masteries guide us to our true nature, which is happiness, freedom, and love.

The first is the Mastery of Awareness. This mastery teaches us to be aware of what we really are. It is the first step toward freedom because we cannot be free if we don't know what we are, or what kind of freedom we are looking for. The Toltecs said, "Let us see ourselves with truth", and they created a mastery just for awareness.

The second is the Mastery of Transformation, which teaches us how to become spiritual warriors and stalk our actions and reactions so we can break free of the knowledge that enslaves us. This mastery shows us how to change the dream of our life by changing our agreements and beliefs.

The Mastery of Love is the result of the first two masteries. From the Toltec perspective, everything is made of Love. Love is Life itself. When we master Love, we align with the Spirit of Life passing through us. We are no longer the body, or the mind, or the soul; we are Love. Then every action we take is an expression of Love, and Love in action can only produce happiness.

When we master Awareness, Transformation, and Love, we reclaim our divinity and become one with God. This is the goal of the Toltec.

An amazing book!

Only equal in comparison to "The Road Less Traveled". I've heard many good reviews of the author of this book and will now download his other two books from this site!
Even if they are merely standing on the shoulders of giants the message is heard loud and clear. Deep profound wisdom. I wish I had read these books many years ago.
Wisdom is one of the best gifts a person can receive.

Very good

At first this book seemed a bit too dramatic, but once I began to understand the point, the message became very clear and helped me understand the foundation of love its value in my life and to the people that are important to me.

Didn't Master It

I've read very few "philosophy of relationships" books, but I can say that this one is interesting. It was a little too new age/free-to-be-you-and-me/I-am the-center-of-the-universe/all-I-can-do-is-accept-you-for-who-you-are for my own tastes. I can't claim that the book changed my life like some other reviewers claim, but it did get me thinking about relationships in a new way. To me that made it worth while.

The reading style is ok. The male and female reader read alternate chapters, which I found a little distracting.

Slow down!

There is no doubt this is worth listening to, but it goes too fast, not allowing one to really absorb the ideas. Other thought-provoking books are a bit slower-paced like The Power of Now and The Four Agreements. I wish iTunes had a 'slow' option!

The perfect relationship?

This book is an amazing and succinct description of why there is so much pain and difficulty within relationships and, most importantly, it offers tips on how to change our perception of relationships to work towards healthy happy loving ones.

Required reading

When I started listening to this book I realised I'd already read it a year ago on Kindle. My initial thought was to return it and re-use the credit, but I was on a dog walk and left it playing anyway, and I'm glad I did. It's just brilliant. So many wonderful and valuable lessons about love and relationships. This book should be read by everyone, several times. I won't be returning it, so that I can listen to it over and over.

Celebrity-endorsed, child-level timewaster

This book is a key example of why to avoid things endorsed by celebrities not in the field of the book.

It is a collection of people speaking about fundamental and crucial concepts such as mindfulness and not-self dressed up in language to appeal to the lowest common denominator and stay at home mums.

Concepts are dumbed-down to the point that they lose their meaning. for example, referring to the heart as a magical kitchen.

The tone is accusatory and segregating. Characteristics which make it appeal to more basal thinkers. People are identified as being 'sick', having 'parasites' and 'wounds', being filled with 'poison' etc.

This is combined with never being sure if the author believes in God or not. I personally don't mind either way but at various points it refers to the body as God, you as God, the traditional concept of God, Jesus as lord and concepts of non-deity creation and evolution whilst ending the book with a prayer.

Use of hot terms, fashionable forms of empowerment to sell copies. It is so sad.

This is trash at its finest and I strongly advise people to read the subtle art of not giving a f*** instead or even better, why Buddhism is the truth.

This book is a waste of time.

the girl on the bench. how I wish she understood me. but it wasn't her time. instead I create love for her and she will feel it, even though she may never know it came from me. girl on the bench: please forgive me, I want what's best for you, I love you. this is true to me, don't believe these words if they do not feel good to you.

A lot of life lessons to be learned!

Excellent book! I'd say this helps put you in the right mindset to deal with a lot of life. I'm usually someone who's very skeptical of all this 'ancient civilization wisdom' mumbo jumbo. However It's got a very unique view on how to approach self love, and loving those around us. After reading it, I'd say its in your best interests both to learn from the wisdom in here and share it with your loved ones. You really do learn how to master understanding emotions, interpersonal relationships. But importantly, understanding (and possiibly controlling) your own emotions and view of life.
