Thirty-five years after the events of The Three Musketeers, d’Artagnan, Athos, Porthos, and Aramis find themselves caught between conflicting loyalties in a power struggle that could change the face of the French monarchy.

For eight long years, a young prisoner has languished within the dreaded Bastille, his face hidden in an iron mask. He knows neither his true identity nor the crime for which he has been imprisoned. But Aramis knows this secret—a secret so dangerous, it could topple the King from his throne! Will his cause divide the once indivisible band of musketeers?

A tale of mystery, adventure, and political intrigue, this conclusion to Dumas’ swashbuckling musketeer saga is based on the true story of a masked prisoner who dwelled in the Bastille during the Louis XIV’s reign and whose identity remains in question to this day.

King Louie doesn't seem that bad and does not seem to deserve the same I'll treatment this far. he was so evil in the films.

If you, like me, ever wondered what happened to the characters after the Three Musketeers...here's your answer! Just steel yourself, because Dumas throws a couple of curves into the mix.
Simon Vance is an accomplished narrator who does an excellent job with this classic.

I could easily read any of his other works over and over. This one is best left unread.

Not Dumas' best work by far.

the narrator's pronunciation and voices were very good, and the story very interesting however it was hard to follow for much of it because each main character has more than one name and because this is an audio book it was hard to know who was who. Also, I'm not sure share on the series this takes place because there us more than one way to divide it and it wasn't in the same place that my kindle book with the same name was.

good story, hard to follow

This is the final installment in the “Three Musketeers” saga and we’ve seen the 4 men change from brash, swashbuckling heroes who would take on any challenge to elderly men who have gone in very different directions. But, their famous slogan, “All for one and one for all,” is still valid. However, now they have gone in very different directions and they are involved in things that will certainly try those bonds.

This book is part 3 of book 3, but it is more often thought of as a separate story in its own right. And, the interesting thing about the whole saga is that, other than the main protagonists in the story, the remaining significant characters are all real historical figures. Yes, there truly was a prisoner who wore an iron mask so that no one could ever know who he was. In fact, we still don’t know, though various theories have been proposed. Dumas’ story assumes that the prisoner is the identical twin brother of King Louis XIV who was hidden from the world at birth and imprisoned as a young boy in order to strengthen the throne of Louis XIV as we find out in the first chapter..

The story well describes the societal norms of France at the time. The country was Catholic, but the morality is based more on honor and on “love” than on any real sense of sin or moral law. Mistresses are common, not only for the king but, it seems, for everyone. Though the plot revolves around the man in the iron mask, he doesn’t actually get his mask until the end of the book, and he is really more of the fulcrum for all the other subplots that, put together, are the real focus of the book. And, another subplot, which could have been written as a separate book, is the story of Athos’ adopted son Raoul and his love for Louise who ultimately betrays his love and destroys his interest in living.

The book is a fitting conclusion to the tale fully rounding out the 4 main characters and ending with only one still alive. It’s a tale of intrigue, of betrayal, of seduction, but also of loyalty and honor. It portrays a world that is far from the moral standards of our modern world, but in positive and negative ways. And, it is complicated with so many individual stories interwoven into a whole, but thoroughly interesting as well.

I've always been a fan of the works of Alexandre Dumas. His stories are the very definition of the term "classic literature". As for the narration, Simon Vance could read the dictionary and I would listen to it.

great book even better narration
