Amazing story of an amazing man!

While some parts get a little complex and can be difficult to understand, the overall story is amazing. Von Neumann contributed to so many different areas that led to massive leaps in human advancement and even helped us win a World War. I look forward to branching out further into some of the interesting concepts he helped advance starting with game theory!

Great book

I came here for the movie Oppenheimer. This is a fascinating, enjoyable book. I listen to several parts of it more than once I can’t recommend it enough.

More History the Biography

Do not go into this book thinking that it is a straight biography. It is more a look at the significant milestones in science and tech that involved John von Neumann. The biography part of things is mostly an afterthought. Once you realize its true focus the book is very good. NOW to the narration, absolutely the strangest I have ever encountered. Nicholas Camm is British, VERY British, think if Monty Python narrated a book! Nothing in this book has any connection with England, this is not a bio of Issac Newton (for instance) so the choice is baffling and was almost impossible to get used to.

Extremely informative book of not only Von Neumann, but the entire scientific research community of this time.

Strongly recommend this book. A thoroughly enjoyable telling of an extraordinary and fascinating man. As important to our modern world as Einstein.

Not your usual biography

The author describes it as not quite like any other biography as it’s not just about his life but his jdeas and he seems to have delivered a great book. The subject was interesting a mathematician a physicist of quantum nature , an engineer of the atomic bomb no less , a teacher a mentor , inventor a new field of game theory, a cold warrior and most passionately a computer and AI scientist. I really loved this book as it goes in the details of the technology and not just the life of the subject. Recommended reading.

Brilliant Zelig bio traces a new mid-century history.

Van Neumann is too brilliant to identify with and this nearly kept me from reading this well researched and difficult to write biography. His expertise was so broad that the author sometimes struggles to get the science right does nearly 100% of the time (I found only minor errors, Eg, left out ramifications of failure of equilibrium theory and some attribution debates are hard to settle without details that would distract). Still this is hardly a criticism what the author gets right and manages to deftly explore indicates a near genius behind the book.

Of special interest is the author’s capacity to track the von Neumann (vN) shooting star, and this produces while passing through constellations of geniuses from Hilbert to Mandelbrot a new and novel line through 20th century scientific history which has been prematurely concretized. Russell was too influential in logic, and class theory is under-taught in logic. Taking QM through vN is fascinating and changes the common view of Dirac. Again, his mixup with the military and the failed GOFAI history are presented with critical nuance to break the caricatures of Dr. Strangelove and MIT’s failed AI program.
