Publisher's Summary

In the colonial cities and towns of Fatrasta, peace has never been easy. Immigrants fight amongst themselves or turn on the native population, while the governing power of the Kez Army steps in only to enforce the will of apathetic local governors assigned by a distant crown.

Young war hero Ben Styke commands a colonial garrison in a sleepy frontier suburb. When the governor's cruel brother stops for the night, rising continental tensions force Styke to protect the people of his town in a brutal escalation that threatens to destroy everything and everyone he has fought for.

Occurs 12 years before the events in Sins of Empire.

Not worth the credit , and it pains me to say it.

I am a huge fan of this series and can not wait for the next full book... but I could barely get through this audio book because of the narration. The sad part is that this fatal flaw was completely avoidable because this is the same reader the author has had read all his short novellas and the feedback from listeners could not have been more straight forward and brutal that the reader was killing his story. I don't know if he didn't care to listen to the fan base of his new book series or if he had no choice. But this is the last chance I give to a book read by this person and I sure hope that doesn't keep me from buying the next audio book in this series... but I just can not take another book read by her even if it is a great book.

Julie Hoverson was a terrible choice for this Book

Look I absolutely love Ben Styke as a character. He's the main character in this story, he a gruff and ruthless killer, with a voice that's suppose to sound like the Bass echoes of dyeing star! He's supposed to sound like a man's man. Who the heck though it was a good idea cast a woman voice actor, who cant even sound remotely like a man... I'm sure she did a best, but it completely ruined the story for me.

Audible can do better, this is not worth a credit or money.

The story is interesting and good, but the narrator is huge part of bringing this work to life and this one failed.

They need to bring in another male voice actor and re-release this work. Bring in Geno Segers. Get it together people.

Good story, terrible narrator.

The whole novel feels forced do to the narrator's style. As if she wanted to be a man, and not just for the characters, but during the narration itself. Very annoying. Luckily the novel is short and the story makes up for it.

I love the powder mage series but...

The narrator is awful. Her voice of waivers between a forced theatrical accent suited for a children’s book and a faked ennui as if mocking a fifties version of a posh Brit

Worst narration ever but fun story.

Love these stories, wish they were longer. Please get a better narrator I did not buy others because of it.

the narrator was obviously trying to get it right. however these characters need a different vocal range. really detracted from the story. also way overpriced at $10.

Worst narration EVER

Didn't believe the bad reviews and bought this anyway.
Couldn't get past narration first few minutes or so....really really bad, promping me to write this. I have never written a review before out of a thousand books from Audible.

Great story....Preformance not so much.

I love these books! I was hard pressed to get through this short one in 8 hrs due to the preformance. I had to take breaks. It might just be me but, Julie Hoverson did not capture the feel of the story nor the characters in her Over Dramatic style. Maybe she is better at other stories. Just my opinion.

Brian McClellan keep up the good work!!

Good story bad casting

Feel like casting person chose Judi Dench to play John Rambo. Not the best option for the voice actor.

Good story, Dodgy narration.

Enjoyed this and look forward to listening to more of Brian McClellan's work. Was less impressed by narrator. I think who ever picked this particular one made a poor choice.
