Publisher's summary

From acclaimed British author Nathan Dylan Goodwin comes this exciting new genealogical crime mystery, featuring the redoubtable forensic genealogist, Morton Farrier.

When Morton is called upon by Ray Mercer to investigate the 1911 disappearance of his great aunt, a housemaid working in a large Edwardian country house, he has no idea of the perilous journey into the past that he is about to make. Morton must use his not inconsiderable genealogical skills to solve the mystery of Mary Mercer’s disappearance, in the face of the dangers posed by those others who are determined to end his investigation at any cost.

This is the second book in the Morton Farrier genealogical crime mystery series, although it can be enjoyed as a stand-alone story.

How Do You Figure Out the past? Forensic Genealogy

This is a most wonderful, intriguing and hard to put down story. I'm amazed at how well Mr Goodwin weaves and connects the past with the future. The plot didn't waver and was completely understandable for a non- genealogy person to learn from and to follow!! My latest mission is to read every book written by this author!! It's been a suspenseful yet interesting journey. I appreciate the work and tenacity of Morton Farrier as he resolves his client's request, even at his own peril. I believe this series gets better and better as you read each volume. Thank you Mr Goodwin for such a beautiful, fulfilling, and enjoyable journey. It's been a wonderfully worthwhile use of my time. I feel like I've been on vacation once I complete each book!!And I have learned a lot about the ins and outs of genealogy research!! Your books put together two of the things I enjoy most ~ genealogy and mysteries. You have a new follower in me. And I look forward to your next book on the life and times of Morton Farrier!!

Fabulous book!

Narration is so very well done I could not stop listening until the end. Well written, characters become friends as the story progresses. Mighty fine listen.

Let us look forward to more from Dylan Goodwin

Excellent Haunting Historical Mystery

I loved this book! A haunting historical mystery about a disappearance and family secrets was what I was looking for and exactly what I got. I couldn’t stop listening and am so ready to listen to the rest of the author’s books!

Lost in the past!

I’m crying in the parking lot listening to the last details of the book. This one was wonderful, lots of twists and sadness that eats away at you, forcing you to finish the book. The last scene crushed me. Read it if you love genealogical historical fiction.

Keep it real

Spoiler (sort of) warning!

I am enjoying getting to know Morton Farrier and wish there had been a little more focus on the threads concerning him and his family. Goodwin leaves lots of little breadcrumbs along the way, which are intriguing, but can also provide a little too much foreshadowing too early.

I think some of the modern-day drama related to people trying to keep their family secrets quiet feels forced and unnecessary, but it won’t stop me from continuing with the series!

As far as the performance goes, there were a few noticeable shifts in the audio recording levels between some chapters and I didn’t like how the narrator changed Mary’s accent.

Keeps you wanting to Read More

I am new to reading and this book held me near. I had a hard time putting it down. The words drew pictures for me to imagine I was really there watching it all happen, hearing the sounds, the smells, and walking in the dark hallways and down the paths. The twists and turns the story took were great. I do genealogy and the clues to where to search for details and vital records was also very inspiring. Thank You! I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

Enjoyable story

I enjoyed this story, my second of the series. Some parts of the storyline send seem to me to take take leaps or have disconnects, but overall it is a fun story and mystery.
