Publisher's Summary

The Lord of Stariel is dead. Long live the Lord of Stariel. Whoever that is.

Everyone knows who the magical estate will choose for its next ruler. Or do they? Will it be the lord’s eldest son, who he despised? His favourite nephew, with the strongest magical land-sense? His scandalous daughter, who ran away from home years ago to study illusion?

Hetta knows it won’t be her, and she’s glad of it. Returning home for her father’s funeral, all Hetta has to do is survive the family drama and avoid entanglements with irritatingly attractive local men until the Choosing. Then she can leave. But whoever Stariel chooses will have bigger problems than eccentric relatives to deal with.

Winged, beautifully deadly problems.

For the first time in centuries, the fae are returning to the Mortal Realm, and only the Lord of Stariel can keep the estate safe. In theory.

The Lord of Stariel is the first book in the Stariel quartet.

Nice Twist

Felt very Victorian but modern at times. Liked that the female lead had a brain. Nicely done.

Unexpected and delightful

The prologue of this book had me so confused… It seems so incongruous with the blurb about the story. That is the perfect antidote for how this book goes. It’s a lovely novel about a multi faceted family and an estate with rich heritage and BOOM fey invasion! Absolutely LOVE the characters and FANTASTIC narration

not a dumb heroine

I adored this book, this is probably the first time I was not yelling at the heroine for making dumb choices just to further a plot along. Hetta is brilliant and logical and does not keep silly secrets to herself when the problem would be resolved just by telling someone. I was so invested in her mundane journey that I'd forgotten about the fae until they they turned up and was even more in love with the plot that we didn't just forget about mundane problems to deal with magical ones. a beautiful balance between magical and mundane with all problems equally given attention. I've already bought books 2-4 and cannot wait to listen to them. I will say I did guess quite a few plot points but was also surprised by some of the bigger ones. I was right along with Hetta as she figured things out.

Downton Abbey meets the fantasy realm…

… and I’m here for it! This book was a delightful surprise. It was an included title in my membership so I thought I would give it a try, and I just outright loved it. The character descriptions of fae leave nothing to the imagination, I love the narrator’s voice, and it was easy to be immersed in the story and care about the characters. I enjoyed this book so much I upgraded my membership to use a credit towards book 2. Well played Audible, well played.

A slow start…

The positives to this book are that it is an intellectually sound story telling. I was not beating my head against the wall yelling at an MC for being idiotic, illogical, or repetitive. However, I was expecting it to be more about the Fae and magical world-building. It wasn’t. It was more about the MC’s family and their relationships.

Regardless of the aforementioned and a slow start, I’m going to listen to the next book because even though it’s ant-climatic the characters are endearing and the book is well written.

Fresh and riveting

The story and performance were rope tier! I had been in a lull for books, but this one gave me hope! Interesting and original plot, with great character development. I recommend!

Lots of twists that keep you entertained

The narrator is excellent and the story kept me intrigued, even though I correctly figured out the villain.

Great story, great narrator!!

What a fanciful world — it’s like Downton Abbey on magic. It captured my attention from the first line and kept it throughout. Can’t wait for the next book!✨✨✨✨✨

A novel primarily for teenage girls

Because of all the good reviews I stuck with the audiobook until the end assuming that it would develop beyond an insipid tale that was overly centred on the main character's romantic feelings about two of the men in her life. However, the repetitive and adolescent descriptions of the two men and her feelings towards them undermined what otherwise would have been a strong character, lessened the suspense and weakened the story. I won't be listening to anymore books in the series.

thoroughly enjoyable

Was surprised by how much I enjoyed this easy listening story. I liked that didn't have weak and insipid female characters and the action scenes weren't all fantastical. would listen to.more in the series. Got this from the free audible books section but it is a pleasant introduction to books I might like.

Very enjoyable!

I liked the mix between a historical period and the fey. It is not excessively action packed, but relies more on the interaction between the characters. Good narration. Will listen to the next books of the series.

Good start.

I enjoyed this. It was a bit slow but persevere because it does get better. I am hoping it is as good as Emma Newman and Holly Black. Both write good fae stories

Loved it

I have been looking for a good fantasy series to get my teeth into for a while and this is it.
Rather reminiscent of Cassandra Clare's The Last Hours series, also read by Finty Williams, it instantly brings the Edwardian era to life.
The narrator brings her unique style, breathing life into the characters and creating a world one could easily step into if only the chance arose.
I cannot wait to get started on book 2.

Surprisingly good read

I actually loved this book. I thought it was very well balanced with the romance and action. It reminded me a lot of Bridgerton in all the right ways. Beautifully written and the narrator tied it all together very nicely.

Bridgerton vibes but with fae and magic!

I really enjoyed it and look forward to listening to the next one. Kept getting Bridgerton vibes and enjoyed the more “posh” narration. 💕

Plot, performance and pros all excellent!

absolutely loved it, enjoyably unpredictable, and characters felt logical and consistent. It maintains it's light hearted tone and thankfully avoids many tired tropes. Can't wait to hear the next one.

Beautiful

This is a review for the full series up to A Rake of his own TBR. Wonderful unique fae story with the gentle feel of Gaslamp genre. There’s enough action and tension amongst the story to keep you riveted, but it’s overall a story about characters. What really stands out is how well crafted and unique each character’s voice is. The humour is spot on, feeling natural rather the forced. Tiny bit of steam, gorgeous developing romance, PERFECT

Highly recommend this series

I loved this series. Beautifully written, a wonderful new world to immerse in. great narration, although I would have preferred the narrator didn't change for the last book. It broke the momentum a little, but after I stuck with it for a little I was able to get back into it. loved the character development and the concept of connection to land. I'd highly recommend it.

Finally

A book that is a fantasy, where the female is older the 21, not a simpering miss, so far not a reverse harem and a single narrator. Doing a happy dance, now onto book two

Gorgeous

Lovely world building, storyline with unpredictable twists and excitement and a gorgeous relationship unfolding. The delicate smouldering heat between them is very well paced! Both main characters are intelligent and so very likeable. So happy to have found this author and series. Narrator is also gorgeous x
