Publisher's summary

We admire these men for their greatness, but the truth is Augustine grappled with sexual passions, Martin Luther struggled to control his tongue, and John Calvin fought the battle of faith with worldly weapons. Yet each of these men will always be remembered for the messages they declared - messages that still resound today.

John Piper explores these men's lives, integrating Augustine's delight in God with Luther's emphasis on the Word and Calvin's exposition of scripture. Through their strengths and struggles, we can learn how to live better today. When we consider their lives, we behold the glory and majesty of God and find power to overcome our own weaknesses.

Computer read?

John Piper's content is outstanding, but the reader of this audio book is so mechanical - so machine-like - I can't comprehend the flow of the book at all. I patiently waded through about 45 minutes and then gave up. I honestly couldn't tell you what the book was about. Very disappointing. I fully acknowledge that it may just be me and my ear, but I would urge you to listen to a preview before attempting the whole thing.

The more you get to know God, the more His joy and delight pours into your life!

I enjoyed this book, and am pleased to have discovered this series.

The heroes of faith, features in this book, were only names to me. I had briefly heard of them.

I really enjoyed and was very much inspired in their relentless persistence in the discipline of prayer, Bible study and worship. And yes, I heartily agree that the more we get to know God - which comes from those disciplines, the more His joy and delight pours into us!

Thank you to both author and narrator for bringing to life the joy and delight of the Father that these heroes show in their lives.

Life changing!

It is filled with simple yet deep truths of God for our lives and our purpose. Also, it is easy to follow and makes it fast. I could listen to it again and again, and I probably will, but try take notes.

Informative encouraging and challenging

Piper draws lessons from the lives and teaching of 3 flawed giants of Christian history: St. Augustine, Martin Luther and John Calvin.
The book was originally a series of lectures so it makes easy listening.
Much to consider, especially that sanctification comes only from a joyful relationship with Christ.

Must read for every Christian!

If only Christians all over the world would know the lives of these saints, they would live passionately and courageously for God. They would know how to fight our modern oppositions in Christendom.

Enjoyed very much

This is a great book to listen to when you are relaxing and quiet. When you can close your eyes,
Not for multi-tasking.

I have absolutely no problem with the reader, Bob Souer. He reads
“Table talk with Martin Luther”
which this book doesn’t hold a candle to. Highly recommend if you are interested in Martin Luther, or the Reformation

. This book just skims the surface of these theologians lives. It was nice for me this afternoon, to unwind. And it was free!

What a way to kill the joy

I have to assume that this book is excellent because it’s by Piper BUT the narration seems to be computer generated. It is impossible to take in the information. I give up…can’t finish. This is the devil’s work.

So needed today..with all the evil falsely attempting to expose the truth…

We desperately must yield to God’s word and sovereignty…. Daily committing our being to becoming soldiers for Christ… defending God’s word by committing ourselves to total obliteration of all evil posing as the word… wolves in sheep clothing……

Excellent and eye opening

To see that and to be reminded the God is able to change the lives of sinners goes beyond words themselves, an illuminating book by John Piper.
