A twisted killer targeting psychologists has left a grisly trail across Europe. Dr Tony Hill, expert at mapping the minds of murderers, is reluctant to get involved. But then the next victim is much closer to home.... Meanwhile, his former partner DCI Carol Jordan is working undercover in Berlin, on a dangerous operation to trap a millionaire trafficker. When the game turns nasty, Tony is the only person she can call on for help.

Critic reviews

"McDermid has become our leading pathologist of everyday evil....The subtle orchestration of terror is masterful." (Guardian)

This entry in Val McDermid’s series about profiler Tony Hill and detective Carol Jordan is less fraught than its two predecessors, but it is just as involving. Carol is working undercover in Berlin, trying to stop an international guns/drugs/refugee smuggler, while Tony is invited to consult on a series of murders of academics, all psychologists who have conducted experiments on human behavior. The two cases run on parallel lines, and each is very intriguing. The relationship between Tony and Carol finally begins to blossom, only to be dealt a severe blow. That is just one reason I’m eagerly anticipating the next book. I know I’ll be treated to a cracking story with rich themes and the underlying thread of the protagonists’ relationship.

Saul Reichlin was outstanding with the delivery of the story
