About this listen

The Lakota Way received the prestigious Audie Award, considered the "Oscar" award of the audiobook industry, in 2004 for the category of best inspirational audio.

The myth of Deer Woman teaches a lesson on respect. The legend of Crazy Horse illuminates a lesson on humility. And the story of Eagle brings home the importance of compassion. These stories from the heart of Lakota culture and its survival, and their meanings, still resonate deeply with our daily lives.

Rich with storytelling, history, folklore, and Marshall's own personal experiences, The Lakota Way expresses the heart of Native American philosophy and the 12 core qualities that are crucial to the Lakota way of living: bravery, fortitude, generosity, wisdom, respect, honor, perseverance, love, humility, sacrifice, truth, and compassion.

Compelling and profound, The Lakota Way gives a fresh outlook to those searching for a new perspective on spiritual and ethical living.

Very good read(listen)!!
Made me think"what if everything had gone the opposite direction this whole time!?" every person that came here from a different country, land mass, Europe, etc had to either get on board with the native way of living or be slaughtered and/or rounded up and put on small chunks of shitty land called trailer parks and live below( well) be low the poverty level! I think that would make one hell of a movie!!!

It is nice to read a book about Native American stories that’s written by a Native American. It seems the stories were told to the author by his grandmother. Like so many of the Native American tribes in matriarch, for grandmother plays an important role in the storytelling of the tribe.

I found this book to be absolutely wonderful. It makes me want to find more stories from grandmothers of the native indigenous people of America

Great book

Not only is Marshall an excellent philosophical and historical Native American writer, but his deep, resonant, very Lakotan voice is an absolute pleasure to listen to. I've already listened to this book 3 times this year.

A book worth hearing more than once. Joseph Marshall teaches about Lakota values through stories passed down through oral traditions. Each story focuses on traits and qualities that help us learn to be our best selves as huma. beings. Interspersed are pieces of Lakota history that exemplifies these traits...as well as historical events that shed light on the less than admirable domination of Native Americans by European settlers. I felt it was a fair and balanced retrospective.

The Lakota Way was an engrossing history of the Lakota people.

Would you listen to The Lakota Way again? Why?

Yes, I will listen to it many times. Joseph Marshall's narration is really great. I wish audible could use him to narrate all the books in their catalogue. He speaks slowly and plainly, teaching enduing lessons. I have 75 audiobooks, and this is my favorite. It's more than just stories, oral history, or lessons. The sum is greater than the parts, it's a very beautiful book and special experience.
