Publisher's summary

Ex-Australian Specialist Response Group leader, Tim “Harry” Harrigan, has been running covert ops for almost a decade. A lone wolf, he’s single-handedly taken down terrorists and national security threats, or so he thinks. He’s been in the game far too long, and when he sees a familiar threat, he knows his time is up.

Asher Garin is a dangerous man. A man without loyalty, a man without a nationality, without a country, without a home. He’s also a mercenary for hire to the highest bidder. His next job is a face he recognises, and after a tip-off, he learns he too is a marked man.

It’s a different game now, and Harry and Asher have a better chance at surviving if they stick together. But it’s not just the game or the rules that have changed. The stakes have too.

Because on their own, they had nothing to lose. Together, they do.

Great Thriller in a soothing pragmatic, sexy voice

I love my thrillers and in them I like fewer thrills and more thoughtful detail to the spy work. This book meets those needs. I won't go into any of the story but this is a book to be appreciated. Also, the entire storyline is rather a surprise with a sort of serpentine movement. Glen Lloyd's performance was so good in this book I looked up other books performed by them.

enjoyed it

📖 Story comment: Overall, on its own I enjoyed it, the characters were entertaining and the story and pace were good. I enjoyed the concept of the story and the friction between the two MC's which was more playful than hateful as competitive rival assassins learn to trust in each other and their relationship builds.

In comparison to other titles from this author: The action and suspense could have been "more". I've probably come to expect so much more from this author eg: I felt the action of Nova Praetorian and the Cronin series. Maybe it needed to be a little longer ... I'm not really sure what would have elevated it to my expectations - maybe i'm just spoilt! - having said that though, I wouldn't not relisten to it.

🎧 Narrator comment: Glen Lloyd has done a good job on the narration, I had no problem distinguishing characters and the rhythm, inflections and intonations all worked to bring the book to life, if anything I would have liked a little more tension to build the excitement in the action scenes, although I did feel for Asher when he was captured.

📌 Where does it fall on my personal scale? 5
hmm ... where do I put this one.... i've been on a bit of a run on loner assassins teaming up to save their own skin lately but it just wasn't as good as I expected.

Average All The Way

There is absolutely nothing wrong with three stars.

This is a good listen. Both main characters were interesting and the narrator did a fine job, It rates only as a three for me because it started out strong but then didn't keep the momentum.

Good story. Good narration.

This was certainly the type of story that grabs my attention. A mercenary vs a covert ops specialist with a dash of romance. The story started out with some exciting moments. After the romance took over the story, I started to miss the intensity of the first couple chapters.

If you want a "snipers fall in love story" this is a good choice. The narration is well done, and the plot is interesting.

Assassins On The Run

If you like the Bourne stories then you’d probably like this one. It’s an action story of two men whom come together to find out who has cut them loose, why, and make them pay.
The story starts out strong, builds, explores, and ends with a just right HEA.
Sure the action takes a back seat after a bit, but I appreciated the break and character development. The narrator did a bang up job and kept my attention throughout.

Grumpy Sunshine Assassins!

Reread - Listened to the audiobook and still love this romance! Glen Lloyd did a great job narrating. Grumpy sunshine assassins just work so well, and I love how much the grumpy MC begrudgingly does kind things for the sweet MC. Adorable, very action packed. Jason Bourne movie parallels.

Fantastic!

Contract killers for the win. I am blown away with how this author keeps writing such great storylines. This was so fresh and different that I couldn’t put it down.

Henry is a big, quiet and intense man. Asher comes to his rescue and the two can hardly keep from killing each other. Asher is the total opposite of Henry. He is snarky, loves to talk and to goad Henry. Which makes you laugh. This book has meat and bones and well written characters that she took the time for you to get to know. How refreshing!

The narration is so fantastic. I have really enjoyed listening to everything he does!

Erotica with a bit of action

so. I just finished reading Tallowwood, and thought that was great, therefore I bought this book.
Sadly I can't recommend it to anyone. Unless you are looking for juvenile written erotica with a splash of superficial action, a repetitive writingstyle and a woe is me attitude
this was definitely not for me.

Not Great , depends upon what you are looking for

I am a huge fan of NR Walker. HUGE

There are many many of her books that I have enjoyed more than once (some a half dozen times - *ahem* Red Dirt Heart). I am hesitant in writing this review because I did not like this book, I also didn't dislike it .

I do not think the tale was gripping or full of excitement . Yes there were many dangerous events depicted but I didn't feel the suspense. I was also thrown off by the violent insertion of the sex scenes - Ms. Walker can write a good bedroom scene, she can write romantic, she can write frenzied and she can write hot & sweaty but she usually doesn't write so many and so explicitly - (which is FINE btw I am not squeamish or puritanic when it comes to sex scenes) but they didn't quite fit - especially when there are so many and how they morph in intent from the MC's. I'm trying very hard not to spoil anything BUT the resolution to the mystery was so simple and uncomplicated that I didn't understand why all the rest of the fuss- other than for the writer to toss her hat into a new genre and to write descriptions of places we've never seen before. Honestly , I came away from the book feeling like I know more about the architecture and scenery of Moscat than I do about either of the MC's . It just got so suddenly schmoopy. (don't get me wrong- I am a fan of schmoopy )

The MC's character development was so contradictory at the end that I wasn't sure they were the same people .. perhaps that is her point. Maybe I've read too many James Patterson or Tal Bauer and am comparing apples to oranges since she did categorize it as a Gay Romance and not a Romantic Suspense,. . For this author , her first foray into this genre its a pretty good job. But meh it's ok.
