"Kenny Blyth's warm Scottish accent and facility with creating characters make him the ideal narrator for Ann Cleeves' new series featuring Detective Jimmy Perez and his partner, Willow Reeves." — AudioFile

The Killing Stones marks the eagerly awaited return of Ann Cleeves' beloved detectives from the Shetland series, and a gripping new investigation with a stunning new setting, from the New York Times bestselling author and creator of three iconic detectives beloved in TV and print: DI Jimmy Perez (the Shetland series), DI Vera Stanhope, and DI Matthew Venn (The Long Call).

It's been several years since Detective Jimmy Perez left Shetland. He has settled into his new home in Orkney, the group of islands, off the northern coast of Scotland, with his partner Willow Reeve and their growing family. One stormy winter night, his oldest and closest friend, Archie Stout, goes missing. Ever the detective, Perez catches a boat to the island of Westray, where Archie worked as a farmer and lived with his wife and children.

But when he arrives he finds a shocking scene: Archie's body, on an archaeological dig site and an ancient Westray story stone with precise spirals carved into it beside him, the clear murder weapon. The artifact, taken from a nearby museum, seems to suggest a premediated murder.

But Perez is so close to the case that he struggles to maintain an objective distance from the potential suspects. He finds it difficult to question Archie's wife, whom he's known for years. Rumors swirl about the dead man's relationship with a young woman new to the island, an artist. With each new lead, the case becomes more twisted and Perez wonders if he will ever find out what happened in his friend's final days.

Well written but boring. The characters were not well defined. Not Ann Cleeves' best.

I could not stay interested.

I’ve read all of the raving reviews of this book, and I feel completely disconnected from what they’re saying.
This one seems like a rehash of Raven Black mixed in with annoying Earth Mother Willow taking up far too many pages.
Dreadfully disappointing.

More Willow than Jimmy

The setting in Orkney is amazing, everything we love about Ann Cleeves writing is present and it is a clever mystery.

Nice start to a new series with old friends

This book was very long, could have been shorter. Novels that don’t explore all the characters involved in a murder then to spend the last chapters exposing the killer short change the reader into false who done it plot.

Bring back Jimmy Perez

I thought the book was the usual Ann Cleeves storytelling. Interesting characters, tight storylines, the location is as much a character as the people. I’ve visited Orkney so I enjoyed reading about places I remembered. My only slight negative was the ending chapters. They felt like a rush to finish the book and didn’t develop the back story of the murderer in enough detail to put that person into the mix of possibles.

it was great having Jimmy back, and the mystery was tangled enough to really keep my interest.

Riveting as always

I truly love this author and have always enjoyed the fair isle series. I was looking forward to this one but unfortunately it was very willow-centric. If she wasn’t in the chapter then Jimmy Perez spent a large portion of the chapter wishing he was with her. The mystery itself was good and I was surprised by the outcome but I missed Sandy and Duncan and Cassie. The performance was wonderful as always. I always enjoy listening to this performer. I’m just not a big fan of the Willow character. I feel like moving forward though she’s going to be in the way of the story focusing on Jimmy Perez. I just wish she would go back to the commune.

Too much Willow
