Historia
A landslide has closed the Korowai Pass on New Zealand’s South Island, cutting off the town of Thorndike and leaving a sizable farm abandoned. The disaster presents an opportunity for Birnam Wood, an undeclared, unregulated, sometimes-criminal, sometimes-philanthropic guerrilla gardening collective that plants crops wherever no one will notice. For years, the group has struggled to break even. To occupy the farm at Thorndike would mean a shot at solvency at last. But the enigmatic American billionaire Robert Lemoine also has an interest in the place.

Historia
Even through the roar and effervescence of the 1920s, everyone in New York has heard of Benjamin and Helen Rask. He is a legendary Wall Street tycoon; she is the daughter of eccentric aristocrats. Together, they have risen to the very top of a world of seemingly endless wealth—all as a decade of excess and speculation draws to an end. But at what cost have they acquired their immense fortune? This is the mystery at the center of Bonds, a successful 1937 novel that all of New York seems to have read. Yet there are other versions of this tale of privilege and deceit.

Chopin's heart is carried back to Warsaw in secret by his adoring sister. A woman must return to her native Poland in order to poison her terminally ill high school sweetheart, and a young man slowly descends into madness when his wife and child mysteriously vanish during a vacation and just as suddenly reappear. Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

The author of the "dazzling epic" (Lev Grossman, Time) Brilliant delivers an indelible view of the ways silence affects those who seek it and those who have it imposed upon them. Through her original, intertwined histories of the penitentiary and the monastery, Jane Brox illuminates the many ways silence is far more complex than any absolute; how it has influenced ideas of the self, soul, and society.

Historia
"The Year of Birmingham", 1963, was a cataclysmic turning point in America's long civil rights struggle. Child demonstrators faced down police dogs and fire hoses in huge nonviolent marches against segregation. Ku Klux Klansmen retaliated by bombing the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church, killing four young Black girls. Diane McWhorter, daughter of a prominent Birmingham family, weaves together police and FBI records, archival documents, interviews with Black activists and Klansmen, and personal memories into an extraordinary narrative....

Historia
Best-selling author, former White House speechwriter, and Atlantic columnist and media commentator David Frum explains why President Trump has undermined our most important institutions in ways even the most critical media has missed, in this thoughtful and hard-hitting book that is a warning for democracy and America's future. Quietly, steadily, Trump and his administration are damaging the tenets and accepted practices of American democracy, perhaps irrevocably.

Egan is one of the few great writers I've found in recent years. Her writing was interesting to me from the first paragraphs. The story is unique, surprising and compelling. Inner dialogue can be sappy and boring, in the hands of some authors, but Egan makes it poignant, funny, observant and curious. Any time I missed a few seconds of the story, I wanted to rewind and make sure I caught every word - which is a rare thing anymore. With some books, I can just space out and miss minutes of the story, and don't feel any desire to go back.
My only frustrations were those that result from good storytelling: I wanted more from and for the characters. I cringed at their weaknesses and egos. I felt personally embarrassed, witnessing certain foibles. I hoped and anticipated redemption and connection, and for more of the story. In this case, these were all signs that Egan crafted a story and characters that drew me in completely. The story did feel a little truncated - but that's only because I wanted to know and experience more of it.
There were sort of three short interwoven stories included in this book, and I would have liked all of them to be longer. One of the strange things about this book is that it does switch between story lines with no explanation, and they seem to be totally unconnected at first. I think this is harder to follow in audio format than it would be reading it. The other weird thing is that the first narrator reads the text as if he's reading a play, announcing who is speaking before every spoken line, instead of trying to make one voice noticeably distinguishable from the next. I thought this would drive me bonkers, but I got used to it - probably only because I enjoyed the writing and story so much. The narration was good.
Definitely recommend.

Maybe if I had just been able to listen straight through..... But there was a crisis and I missed a week and then I was really confused.
Butt overall it's a really good story and it certainly made my walking time go by faster. I would definitely read another book by this author, although I would either read the book or get the audible for a car trip or something where I could listen to the whole thing at one time.
