Jack Durkin is the ninth generation of Durkins who have weeded Lorne Field for nearly 300 years. Though he and his wife Lydia are miserable and would like nothing more than to leave, Jack must wait until his son has come of age to tend the field on his own. It’s an important job, though no one else seems to realize it. For, if the field is left untended, a horrific monster called an Aukowie will grow - a monster capable of taking over the entirety of America in just two weeks. Or so it is said....

I'm still thinking how the ending was perfect cause you wanna root for the guy. I was worried it'd be too slow for me cause I drop alot of books for a slow start but right off the bat I was hooked.

Love how you want him to be right

I love this type of mystery. This is not a YA title but it reminded me of the mystery books I read in elementary and even high school. I loved the suspense. The character development was excellent. I love this type of folk horror, "found an old book in the basement/attic/box" stories. This one had me hooked from the beginning. don't mind the ambiguous ending at all. The ending reminds me of one of my top 10 favorites, The Other by Thomas Tryon (I did not listen to the audiobook because I didn't like the narrator). There was a period in the third act where the main character seems a bit whiney and repeats himself. But the final act is worth it. This was an outstanding suggestion for me.

Held my attention from start to finish. OUTSTANDING narrator. we
