Publisher's Summary

The lake was flat and calm with barely a ripple; its dark waters glistening, reflecting the moonlight as though it were a mirror.

Fritz Marschall knew that neither he, nor his friend, should really have been there. They, like many others before them, had been attracted to the lake by the many rumors that had been circulating. He thought of the endless stories there had been, of treasures sunken in or buried around the lake. He recalled the stories of the lake being used to develop torpedoes and rockets during the war. Looking out across the dark water, he wondered what secrets were hidden beneath the surface.

A story of the search for hidden Nazi gold, a story of murder, blackmail, and revenge

The story of two men: an American GI and an SS major

Good Story, but...

I had high hopes for this title after reading the book description. It started off great too but as soon as you get a little ways into the first chapter the sound effects started and it was very distracting. For some reason the producers incorporated sound effects with every single mention of noise in the story and I could not concentrate on the story itself. I do like sound effects when used sparingly, (as to not take away from the story) throughout an audiobook but I think this was overkill. The performance and story were very good but there were parts I had to rewind and listen to even 3 times due to the sound effects. I could not get a good flow going with this audiobook and this just got me frustrated at some points. I liked the voices that the narrator gave the characters and the storyline was interesting. I think I would rate this much higher if the sound effects were taken out. It did have many good qualities and this was my kind of story too, perhaps that is why I held it so high? I am not sure but release another recorded version without the sound effects and I think I could give this a better and more proper rating. I received a free copy of this title in exchange for an honest review via Audiobook Boom. This in no way affected my opinion.

Good Story Slightly Marred By Sound Effects

I though this was a solid story which was well delivered by the narrator but like another reviewer... I also found some of the sound effects a little jarring. I think if I were John, I'd take them out if this ever gets re-recorded. This is a two time line story and I liked the way they unfolded together and showed you the interconnections without telling you. That's very important to me. As for the actual plot, I haven't listened to (or read) a book like this in years, it's got a lot of retro-charm to it and I wouldn't want to give anything away but you're going to enjoy the way things go. Please note: I solicited and received a review copy of this. However, my opinion is still my own and was not influenced in any way by the author or narrator.

A Good read / listen

The Kammersee Affair, I've read the ebook version and when offered the chance to listen to the audiobook jumped at it. John Holts first novel I believe, the concept of the story is great - a search for Nazi gold after the war. A good adventure story and a good read - though the style of writing is a little dated compared to some high powered thrillers of recent years. Reminiscent of Alistair MacLeans novels. I enjoyed the ebook and enjoyed the audiobook, Highly recommend either. The narration is clear and easy to listen to. I was given a free copy of this audiobook at my own request, and voluntarily leave this review.

Vivid and entrancing

On the pages of this book a cast of characters came alive, some very different from each other they all felt real. The descriptions of the setting let the book play out like a movie in my mind. The characters and settings combined into a book I couldn't stop listening to. The story unfolds in two different times and there are a lot of different elements that interconnect, it made the book a tapestry of elements and people all woven together. The narrator did great character voices, they were distinct and easy to recognize, and the delivery was dynamic and used tone effectively to accentuate the emotions in each scene. I received a free copy of this book from the author and/or narrator and/or publisher and I voluntarily wrote this honest review. interesting plot.

"I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review." I enjoyed this book, found the plot interesting. The narrator did a fairly good job except when he was reading the parts for the Germans in the story. The writing was not the best or worst, sort of in the middle of the road. One thing I did not like was the sound effects throughout the book.

Great Book and very entertaining

With a mixture of fact and fiction this work presents the listener with a very enjoyable adventure with a premise that may have a great deal of truth. The Narrator helps make the Book even more interesting and keeps you glued to your electronic gizmo to anticipate the next chapter. The characters are well crafted and make the story a good read. This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

intense and compelling

From present day to flashbacks provides the backstories, and I found it suspenseful and interesting as I followed along. Multilayered and intriguing! Just enough reality and facts to mingle nicely with the fiction provides an edge of you seat book. I loved when all the lies crumbled and only the cold truth remained. Not pretty, but necessary answers. I voluntarily listened to a free copy of this and am giving an honest review. The narrator did an excellent job with voices and expressions and background music/sounds to bring in all to life.

Gold

I loved this book because it covered war, buried treasure, and four young military officers, all brothers, during WW2. I say, listen to this book, without shedding a tear. Outstanding writer John Holt, outstanding.

unusual war story

we start with some guys trying to find an old abandoned German facility that are rumored to be around a lake. they find some unusual things and we jump to the past. we follow a story about a US regiment and how things ended up where the guys found it in current times. it's a story of greed, murder and revenge that drew in ordinary people and changed them forever. the sound effects are great and the narrator does an excellent job. honestly this would make an excellent murder mystery show/movie.

Couldn’t have been writing better !

I love WWII stories and only John Holt the author got this talent that make it sound like a documentary. I’m so glad to have had the privilege of listening to this audiobook, the story is incredible, it totally pulls you in with all the twists like a story in a story in a story, truly beautifully done. Choosing Ben Werling for narration was an excellent decision, I also loved the background sounds also beautifully done. Absolutely, full heartedly recommend this audiobook for all. In exchange for an honest review I’ve received this audiobook.

Really absorbing!

This story was beautifully told over two time zones. Mid sixties treasure hunters and the last few months of a WWII military base and it’s personnel. A complex tale of greed, murder, blackmail and time brining all things into focus. It could almost be a true story as it’s so convincingly portrayed. John Holt can certainly write interesting dialogue and Ben Werling can just as certainly deliver it. Although not a war story as such, it does still give the atmosphere of the confusion and panic in the closing days of that terrible time. Certainly an enjoyable book, well worth buying.

Had me glued from the beginning!

I absolutely loved this book! I couldn't put it down. I loved how they told the story of the present time, giving hints about the past, and then telling each individual Soldier's Story. for once I had no questions at the end of the book. I would definitely recommend this book anyone especially those who like War Stories!

A Truly Amazing Listen

I have listened to a few books written by John Holt. And I have to say that this book has become one of my favorites. The characters of the book were each given their own highlights in the story - it made me connect with each of them more. Though some parts of the novel happened during World War II, it was not a war story. It was intriguing from the start and I got really hooked to it. The narration was great, as well. Ben Werling has an attention-grabbing kind of voice and he was really good at doing different accents. The background sound was a brilliant addition. I liked it that I was hearing train whistles, water splashes and other sounds - because it made the book more interesting and entertaining for me. This book truly deserves Five-Star reviews! Highly recommended!

The Kammersee Affair

This book was a little hard for me in the beginning because there was so much going on and a bit of hopping from one person to another but once I figured out who was who it was much better. This story was very interesting to listen to. I don’t usually do much history based things but feel the descriptions of the places and times were really good. Also the accents but the narrator were spot on. This recording has some sound affects but not too much or overly loud compared to the narration and I was pleasantly surprised that I liked them. It made you feel like you were more involved with the story. Overall this was a fun listen that anyone who enjoys things based in history will want to listen.

Hidden Gold, Nazis, Secrets and Revenge.

This adventure, crime, mystery story starts as a modern day treasure hunt around a lake in Austria before travelling back in time to the end of WW2 and a secret test facility, Nazi gold, counterfeit currency and murder. The story is told from several perspectives, immersing the reader deep into the psych of the characters. The narration is excellent ensuring a good pace and characterization. Even the background sound effects enhance the enjoyment.
