Publisher's Summary

A teenage movie crush set her standards high. Now a real man needs to meet them. Fast.

Chicago obstetrician Mackenzie “Mac” Huntress set her standards for men very high early on. It’s been over twenty years since she fell for a fictional movie heartthrob, and Mac’s content to wait for the real version to come along; it’s her nagging mother who’s not happy with the timeline. So Mac falls back on her lifelong Mom-surviving skill - lying. The latest fabrication: a handsome neurologist named Michael. Pity he’s too busy to meet her friends and family. Problem solved.

But when Mac’s little sister announces her engagement, Mac is expected to introduce her elusive “plus-one” at the wedding, leaving her with only forty days to find a flesh-and-blood stand-in for the imaginary Michael. And the only potential Mr. Right comes with a big hitch.

However, it turns out Mac’s not the only one bringing secrets to the wedding. With expectations high, and shocking truths to be revealed, Mac’s left to find her own happy ending, which isn’t as simple as in the movies...though it’s definitely worth waiting for.

Cute and Fun

This author is new to me and I found this book on a recommendation from Amazon and room a leap of faith.

I really enjoyed this story! So real life yet fantasy in one.

I don’t know if I have ever listened to this narrator (XE Sands) before either but I enjoyed her slow drawl! It was simply perfect.

I would definitely recommend this one! Now if you are a fan of the sexy times detailed this isn’t the book for you. While this author doesn’t exactly lock you out of the bedroom she doesn’t describe their trysts in detail. I still enjoyed the sweet slow Desiree build between the characters!

Ugh - hours of my life I’m glad I was multitasking

I only write reviews for books I hate and books I love.
This book was worse than an d Harlequin Romance.
It’s not funny, the character development is shallow.
The communication farce is unnecessary.
Any five-star reviews are people who have never read a good book.

Totally relatable

Im so glad someone was brave enough to tell this story. We all have a Jake Ryan in our closet. We hold him up to all men without even realizing it. What a fun satisfying romp! Hope for us all! Cheers!

I loved this story!

This story had so many relatable characters. The main character who can never seem to meet her mother’s expectations. Always being set up with guys who don’t meet the dream. Friends who complain she’s too picky with men. Finding out she’s self sabotaging. It’s all so true, done in a funny and sentimental way. I loved this book. Xi Sands is always a top notch narrator and she is amazing as usual here. I loved the ending so much I went back and listened twice.

A fun listen.

The story was a bit ridiculous at first, but Xe Sands has never done me wrong. I stuck it out and the story improved.

How many cliches can you jam into 6 hours?

Xe Sands saves this book and is probably the only reason I was able to finish it. She is a phenomenal narrator.

The story, however, was phenomenally trite. I had high hopes since the first several couple chapters had good laughs, set the scene well, and established likable enough character. But the second she and the guy get together, the whole story just goes off a cliff and hits every single cliche branch on the way down. Miscommunication as plot device? Check. Baby mama drama? Check. Falling "in love" after a week or two? Check. Everything could have been resolved if the main character grew a pair of ovaries and was just honest with people? Check? Predictable, overly tidy ending? Check, check, and check.

It was so bad that I dozed off for a chunk in the middle and didn't even bother to go back to see what I missed.

Could have been so much more

If you are a woman (or a man) of a certain age, you know who Jake Ryan is, and had a bit of a crush on him.

This is our leading lady, Mac. She is waiting for her own Jake Ryan - and good on her for not settling - but sheesh, she is a 39 year old woman acting like a teenager.

I got so frustrated with her, the lying to her family about fake boyfriends, letting her mum act the way she does (and boy, what a witch she was most of the time). I wanted to yell at the mother, but mostly I wanted to slap some sense into Mac and tell her to grow the eff up.

Ugh. See, frustrating.

And then when she does find a guy she doesn't roll her eyes at, she ogles a guy with a wedding ring *my eyeroll inserter here* I mean, gees she just screams desperation and unlikability.

This story could have been fantastic, but for me it was childish and a bit unlikable.

But maybe this is just that I an too old for the Jake Ryan thing (as looking at it with adult eyes, he really is a bit of a douche the way he treats his girlfriend).

The best thing about this audio was the narration. She has done a great job, trying to make a not go good story great.
