Publisher's summary

The fate of the heavens is at stake in this hilarious and highly-anticipated sequel to the The Epic Crush of Genie Lo, from the New York Times and USA Today best-selling author of Avatar: The Last Airbender: The Rise of Kyoshi

Genie Lo thought she was busy last year, juggling her academic career with protecting the Bay Area from demons. But now, as the Heaven-appointed Guardian of California, she’s responsible for the well-being of all yaoguai and spirits on Earth. Even the ones who interrupt her long-weekend visit to a prestigious college, bearing terrible news about a cosmos-threatening force of destruction in a nearby alternate dimension.

The goddess Guanyin and Genie’s boyfriend, Quentin Sun Wukong, do their best to help, but it’s really the Jade Emperor who’s supposed to handle crises of this magnitude. Unfortunately for Genie and the rest of existence, he’s gone AWOL. Fed up with the Jade Emperor’s negligence, Genie spots an opportunity to change the system for the better by undertaking a quest that spans multiple planes of reality along with an adventuring party of quarrelsome Chinese gods. But when faced with true danger, Genie and her friends realize that what will save the universe this time isn’t strength, but sacrifice.

What a wonderful, crazy contemporary turn on the most fun of Chinese classics!

This book (and its predecessor) is tremendous fun—and the right amount of thought-provoking—whether or not you’ve read “Journey to the West!” High-school volleyball player, getting-ready-to-go-to-college, Genie Lo, is both the human daughter, only child, of a separated first-generation Chinese immigrant couple, and the reincarnation of the powerful, magical gold-banded staff (Ruyi Jingu Bang) always associated with the not-too-well socialized hero the Monkey King. She is now a deity in her own right, the protector god of present-day California, who keeps the resident yaoguai (demons) in order—though she doesn’t always feel very confident about her work. The Monkey King himself is now Quentin , a very cute boy and still —or again — a hero. Together they face the ups and downs of high school, what to do after high school, the question of whether they are really a perfect couple, and the deeds and misdeeds of the gods and goddesses of Chinese heaven and monstrous monsters from other dimensions. Fortunately they have some very good friends and mentors: Eunie Park, Genie’s best friend, and Guan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy, are just two of them. The performance for Audible by Nancy Wu is absolutely perfect.

SO GOOD

I can’t even begin to describe how good this is! Funny, thrilling, exciting heartbreaking, heartwarming, it has everything. The characters are real and lovable, and you’ll be rooting for them every step of the way. Genie has so much dimension and depth, and you can’t help but fall in love with her. I really really wish FC Yee will continue this into a trilogy! There’s so much potential for more stories and adventures :)

One of the best reads for me in some time!

This is one of the most underrated stories and author I've come across. The characters are increadbly remeberable, the story unique, and narriration some of the best in the genre! Loved it!!

Hey! Lightning CAN strike twice!

It's hard to decide if I enjoy this or the Epic Crush more. The plot escalates they way you might expect from a sequel. But I almost have more fun with the non-action parts. Yee has a way of making stories easy and fun to listen to. Not a minute of Genie Lo or the Kyoshi novels were a struggle to finish. Bottom line, this was a lot of fun. buy all 4 of Yee's books. Nancy Wu fits his style so well and you'll be glad you took this advice.

Genie Lo is amazing.

I love love love this series. Genie Lo and Quentin are fascinating characters to me- as are all the characters who appear in book 2.

* I find their characterization incredibly compelling.

* The plot - including the lesser plot - kept me engaged throughout.

* Both Genie's rage and Quentin's rebellious goodness are just -chefs kiss-
