Story
Wars come to an end. But then new ones begin. Just weeks after Hitler's suicide, Cletus Frade and his colleagues in the OSS find themselves up to their necks in battles every bit as fierce as the ones just ended. The first is political-the very survival of the OSS, with every department from Treasury to War to the FBI grabbing for its covert agents and assets. The second is on a much grander scale-the possible next world war, against Joe Stalin and his voracious ambitions.

Story
June, 1941. Determined that the United States will be prepared for war, Franklin D. Roosevelt and "Wild Bill" Donovan orchestrate the most complex espionage organization in history, the Office of Strategic Services. Young and daring, the OSS assemble under a thin camouflage of diplomacy and then disperse throughout the world to conduct their operations. And no operation is more critical than the one being conducted by hotshot pilot Richard Canidy and his half-German friend Eric Fulmar: to secure the rare ore that will power a top-secret weapon....

Story
In the first weeks after World War II, a squeaky-clean new second lieutenant named James D. Cronley Jr. is spotted and recruited for a new enterprise that will eventually be transformed into something called the CIA. One war may have ended, but another one has already begun, against an enemy that is bigger, smarter, and more vicious: The Soviet Union. The Soviets have hit the ground running, and Cronley's job is to help frustrate them, harass them, and spy on them any way he can.

Hailed as the finest combat aviation novel to emerge from the Vietnam War, Flight of the Intruder spent 28 weeks on the New York Times hardcover best-seller list and became one of the top-20 best-selling first novels of all time. An instant classic, the book was translated into more than 20 languages and made into a major motion picture. Its hero, Jake Grafton, became a household name and the star of many more Coonts’ best-sellers. Without question, the strength of the book lies in its flying scenes when Jake Grafton straps himself into the cockpit of his A-6 Intruder.

The investigators
I have listened to all of the WEB Griffin books, and have enjoyed every one, but the narration in this one is so bad I could not finish it. He sounds like a 10 year old reading in class. His reading is dry, and his version of the various voices is awful. They need to do a better job of editing their reades.

Narrator ruins Griffin...
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Could not listen to the whole book because of the narrator, I love W,E,B, Griffin but not with that voice.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Not sure, poor narration did not allow me to "get into" the book
Would you be willing to try another one of Michael Russotto’s performances?
Absolutely not, could not even finish this one. I was picturing someone behind this massive microphone , covering one ear and saying "and to all the ships at sea" as from 75 years ago
Did The Investigators inspire you to do anything?
Yes, find another book.
Any additional comments?
This book has been in my library foir quite a while as I collected the entire series for a trip, can I still return it?

The Badge of Honor Series is Fantastic-
This is one of my favorite series by W.E.B. Griffin, and this installment did not disappoint. Having read a few of the reviews, I'm not sure why all the unhappiness with the narration. Michael Russotto narrated 6 of the first 7 books in this series, and, to my ears, his voice is the respective voice of the characters.
Griffin is one of my favorite authors. His characters are rich beyond words. If you get this deep into the series and you don't haven't grown to love Matthew Mark Paine, Peter Wohl and the gang, I'm not sure if you are capable of seeing lightning and hearing thunder. (A little Griffin figure of speech there :))
One of my favorite aspects of Griffin's writing is his dialogue. The bad new about that is that he has spoiled me for other writers. For example, when you go from one of W.E.B. Griffin's books to a Baldacci novel (in which nobody on Earth speaks like his characters...and I still like Baldacci novels, just saying...) you are left missing the witty dialogue of Griffin.
Great author. Great series. Great novel.

Horrible Narration
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Having a woman read the book. Women can lower their voices, but when a man tries to lighten their voices, or try for a sexy, breathy woman's voice, it ruins it. It is almost comical the way this narrator reads the woman's part.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Matt Payne. Young cop, who is always having to prove himself.
Would you be willing to try another one of Michael Russotto’s performances?
Are you kidding? I want my money back.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Investigators?
Really nothing. However, there is a lot of profanity by people you wouldn't think would go into course longshoremen type cussing, especially by high society gals.
Any additional comments?
Nothing further.
