Beyond organic - a practical guide to nutrient-dense food

Vegetables, fruits, and grains are a major source of vital nutrients, but centuries of intensive agriculture have depleted our soils to historic lows. As a result, the broccoli you consume today may have less than half the vitamins and minerals that the equivalent serving would have contained a hundred years ago.

This is a matter of serious concern, since poor nutrition has been linked to myriad health problems including cancer, heart disease, obesity, high blood pressure, and diabetes. For optimum health we must increase the nutrient density of our foods to the levels enjoyed by previous generations.

To grow produce of the highest nutritional quality the essential minerals lacking in our soil must be replaced, but this re-mineralization calls for far more attention to detail than the simple addition of composted manure or NPK fertilizers.

The Intelligent Gardener demystifies the process, while simultaneously debunking much of the false and misleading information perpetuated by both the conventional and organic agricultural movements. In doing so, it conclusively establishes the link between healthy soil, healthy food, and healthy people.

Seems to revel in putting down all other approaches

Hard for me to get past his generalizations of the failures of all other approaches except his.

old man yells at cloud

This didn't age well is an understatement. Very broad generalizations using personal experiences as the proof.

So much food judgement

As a nutrition professional I enjoy a good book about food and especially gardening. What I don't enjoy is a bunch if food moralization and judgement particularly towards the author's parents. Get over the parent blaming. It sounds so whiny. They did the best with what they knew at the time. Eat more nutrient-dense foods or not. It doesn't make you a better person.

scientific gardening!

Fantastic book for understanding soil and how, with improved soil, you can grow nutrient dense food. All other gardening paradigms mentioned in the book don't have the goal of nutrient dense food or use prescriptions that won't necessarily work everywhere. They use guess work while this book emphasizes soil testing and the tools to read a soil test and how to amend your specific soil based on your testing results.

Tough to follow as an Audiobook

The book is jammed full of facts and figures , and hearing it without a visual representation made it very difficult to absorb.
The narration was good and clear and delivered well.

I learnt so much!

This book is amazing. I learn so much about soil and health. The story is very interesting and engaging. The second half is more heady and would be good to have the paper copy to look at the worksheets. Overall the information is very useful and I look forward to reading it again.
