Publisher's Summary

Sal used to know his place with his adoptive gay father, their loving Mexican American family, and his best friend, Samantha. But it's senior year, and suddenly Sal is throwing punches, questioning everything, and realizing he no longer knows himself. If Sal's not who he thought he was, who is he?

This humor-infused, warmly humane look at universal questions of belonging is a triumph.

Critic Reviews

"Friendships, family, grief, joy, rage, faith, doubt, poetry, and love - this complex and sensitive book has room for every aspect of growing up!" (Margarita Engle, Newbery Honor-winning author of The Surrender Tree)
"Narrator Robbie Daymond's soft, calming tone is appropriate for the peaceful world of 17-year-old Sal.... Daymond's narration, though low-key, gives rounded portraits of all the story's characters and doesn't minimize Sal's heartache or his attempts to control his temper." ( AudioFile)

Happy Birthday to me!

I just want to say that I love the way his books make me feel. I love that there's no real plot, we just get to live with the characters for a snip-it of their lives. I love the way the author describes what's in the hearts of his characters. I just feel so good all over... I hope someone is loving this author. Cause I want to put him in my pocket and keep him with me always. I finished this book on my birthday, and there couldn't have been a better gift for myself.

A story worthy of attention

What an incredible story with raw relatable emotions. A worthy read for those who love inspirational stories that make you think. Thank you to the author for writing and sharing such a story, and thank you to the narrator for bringing the characters to life.

Simply Fantastic ...

Both the story and narration are extremely well done. Which is to say they are complementary in the very best of ways.

If your unsure, try the sample. But absolutely give this author and narrator the chance to demonstrate what others hope to be.

Great job!!!

Dragged on

Beginning was good and the end was good...inbetween dragged on. The writing was good but not as beautiful as other books.

This is life

The story is about how life happens. there is less of the normal drama of a novel. this is not a three act story but it is a beautiful depiction of life.

A little underwhelming

I love Benjamin Alire Sáenz, and this book was written beautifully and had good characters. But I didn't feel like there was a strong enough storyline or significant enough character growth to keep me interested.

Writing outweighs the story

With this author I think I prefer his words to how he tells the story.

Sweet story and narration

This is another beautiful story by Benjamin Alice Saenz.
I love the pace telling the story, and the tones chosen by the narrator: his approach is not only thoughtful, but he successfully transmitted the joy of sharing this dramatic but fundamentally sweet story about coming of age, family and friendship. This narration definitely helps to make the experience of listening to this book more enjoyable.

Beautiful.

A moving and emotional listen. Addictive as it was charming. As with Sánez's Aristotle and Dante discover the secrets of the universe, I have a feeling this will stay with me for a long time to come.

narrator was wonderful, incredible and distinctive

The novel is exactly what you would expect from Benjamin, classic sweet young male protagonist, with a supportive family. It's a lovely touch in a world where those families aren't commonly portrayed in writing.

Sam, the character was a tad annoying, I found her to be intrusive and a nagging tug away from the plot, but never the less, everyone has some kind of downfall.

The story is written in a poetic motion, and I found the short, cryptic chapters the most enticing. But the imagery was on point the whole way through.

Wonderful Book, I believe it lives up to Aristotle and Dante.

P.S. as a gay male, it's lovely to have a story involving gay characters that isn't about AIDS or Coming Out Dramas. Truly Refreshing.
