Publisher's Summary

Sal used to know his place with his adoptive gay father, their loving Mexican American family, and his best friend, Samantha. But it's senior year, and suddenly Sal is throwing punches, questioning everything, and realizing he no longer knows himself. If Sal's not who he thought he was, who is he?

This humor-infused, warmly humane look at universal questions of belonging is a triumph.

Critic Reviews

"Friendships, family, grief, joy, rage, faith, doubt, poetry, and love - this complex and sensitive book has room for every aspect of growing up!" (Margarita Engle, Newbery Honor-winning author of The Surrender Tree)
"Narrator Robbie Daymond's soft, calming tone is appropriate for the peaceful world of 17-year-old Sal.... Daymond's narration, though low-key, gives rounded portraits of all the story's characters and doesn't minimize Sal's heartache or his attempts to control his temper." ( AudioFile)

Happy Birthday to me!

I just want to say that I love the way his books make me feel. I love that there's no real plot, we just get to live with the characters for a snip-it of their lives. I love the way the author describes what's in the hearts of his characters. I just feel so good all over... I hope someone is loving this author. Cause I want to put him in my pocket and keep him with me always. I finished this book on my birthday, and there couldn't have been a better gift for myself.

Tried, but did not finish

I loved Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe so much, that I was really surprised at my reaction to this book. I kept going, even as it seemed to drag more as I went, and while things happened in the plot, it felt more like just a series of events rather than a story that was moving intentionally in one direction. I love a good character-driven story, so the issue was not that this wasn’t a plot-driven novel. The other problem for me was that it felt like reading a story about high school kids written by an adult who thought this is how high school kids act and think, as opposed to a story with high school kids that felt authentic to who those kids are at that age and stage in their life. There was too much self-analysis and summarizing of feelings and action, which threw me out of the story and made it difficult for me to connect with the characters. The narration was very good, but after 7 hours, with 4 more to go, I felt it was time to move on to something else (even though I hate not to finish a book).

A touching coming of age story.

I enjoyed the story of Salvador and his relationship with his father, Sam, and Vito. The struggles he had dealing with his feelings, having lost his mother when he was young and the commitment of friendship make a very enjoyable listen.

Beautiful story and beautiful narration

Absolutely beautiful all way around. The story was really beautiful, but the narration took it to a whole new level.

Dragged on

Beginning was good and the end was good...inbetween dragged on. The writing was good but not as beautiful as other books.

Heartfelt and endearing, although a little simple

Another Saenz story that hits the heart and pulls the strings. I love the author's ability to develop characters that I find so similar to my own experiences. Excellent storytelling. A great read for a teen or adult.

Such a great story

The story was amazing. I love the author. My only complaint is that the narrator’s version of a girl’s voice is not good. He had that cliche version that people use.

Beautiful.

A moving and emotional listen. Addictive as it was charming. As with Sánez's Aristotle and Dante discover the secrets of the universe, I have a feeling this will stay with me for a long time to come.
