Inspired by the physical challenges of stalking elk in the Oregon wilderness—traversing mountainous terrain, braving erratic weather, and evading his quarry’s even more dangerous predators—he began an ever-evolving journey of self-improvement. That these are the same person sounds like the setup to a joke, but this is no joke. This is Arnold Schwarzenegger. And this did not happen by accident. Arnold’s stratospheric success happened as part of a process. Whether at elevation or raising a family back at sea level, those years taught him, he writes, “to distinguish matters of consequence from matters of inconsequence.” He leaves it to his listeners to do the final sort of which is which.

Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

Story
Almost every religion, spiritual practice, philosophy and person grapples with fear. The most repeated phrase in the Bible is “Be not afraid.” The ancient Greeks spoke of phobos, panic and terror. It is natural to feel fear, the Stoics believed, but it cannot rule you. Courage, then, is the ability to rise above fear, to do what’s right, to do what’s needed, to do what is true. And so it rests at the heart of the works of Marcus Aurelius, Aristotle, and CS Lewis, alongside temperance, justice, and wisdom.

Publisher's summary
Colin O’Brady’s awe-inspiring, New York Times best-selling memoir recounting his recovery from a tragic accident and his record-setting 932-mile solo crossing of Antarctica is a “jaw-dropping tale of passion and perseverance” (Angela Duckworth, New York Times best-selling author of Grit).
Prior to December 2018, no individual had ever crossed the landmass of Antarctica alone, without support and completely human powered. Yet, Colin O’Brady was determined to do just that, even if, 10 years earlier, there was doubt that he’d ever walk again normally. From the depths of a tragic accident, he fought his way back. In a quest to unlock his potential and discover what was possible, he went on to set three mountaineering world records before turning to this historic Antarctic challenge.
O’Brady’s pursuit of a goal that had eluded many others was made even more intense by a head-to-head battle that emerged with British polar explorer Captain Louis Rudd - also striving to be “the first”. Enduring Antarctica’s sub-zero temperatures and pulling a sled that initially weighed 375 pounds - in complete isolation and through a succession of whiteouts, storms, and a series of near disasters - O’Brady persevered.
Alone with his thoughts for nearly two months in the vastness of the frozen continent - gripped by fear and doubt - he reflected on his past, seeking courage and inspiration in the relationships and experiences that had shaped his life.
“Incredibly engaging and well-written” (The Wall Street Journal) - and set against the backdrop of some of the most extreme environments on earth, from Mt. Everest to Antarctica - this is “an unforgettable memoir of perseverance, survival, daring to dream big, and showing the world how to make the impossible possible” (Booklist, starred review).

Impossible Last
In the year 2019 after many years of practicing I finally decided to go for it. I am the first white American, under 5'9" to speedwalk backwards across my lawn (a distance of more than 300' in some places, but not where I crossed) while carrying an injured groundhog to safety in temperatures nearing 75° F. I was unaided, unless you count the phone I clutched in my right hand in case I needed to call for help, or the fact that I had just cut my grass (lessening the tripping hazard), or that I had crossed in the narrowest section (40') with the least obstacles. Not only was I the first, but I believe I will be the last to accomplish this great feat.

Inspirational Story!
Revised: Folks, please read the Nat Geo article about Mr. O'Brady and his so called Impossible First, before you buy the book. Decide for yourself. I personally feel duped by yet another social media "star" searching for fame and a pay day.
Wonderful, inspirational story. I appreciate the difficult task of the author narrating his own story. I imagine that narration isn't easy. That said, I think the narrator makes a much better explorer than narrator. We all have our challenges! :-)

Great listen but more research disputes his claims
The book itself is a great listen and inspiring...
However...
I was very disappointed to read an article from national geographic basically saying that the book greatly embellished his story and that he hiked a good portion of the way on an Antarctic road.
According to the artical it quotes Jon Krakauer as saying "O'brady needs to be called out for his false claims"
Really liked the book but unfortunately that artical really tainted it for me.

Boring rendition with bragging
I was so optimistic about this book based on the reviews, but reading it was a true chore. The author is extremely impressed with himself yet fails to make exciting what was surely an amazing adventure. Pads the tale with other feats he impresses himself with. Lists are not stories! Author narration did not help (I’m being kind). All this adds up to reader/listener disappointment.

Good story
This is going to make a great movie and the story itself is very compelling and organized really well. 5 stars for that!
With that said, I often felt that the descriptions were often unnecessarily over dramatic. Maybe it was extra emphasis placed when narrating, I'm not entirely sure. Maybe I've just read and listened to fiction for too long and I'm not giving enough allowances, but I think this could have undergone a bit more editing and less descriptive words possibly found via the thesaurus. I am very aware that the author is a professional athlete and not a professional narrator, but I think I would have preferred someone like R.C. Bray who narrated the Martian. I know that's harsh and really I shouldn't want to hear Colin's story from anyone but him, but I just didn't care for his reading style.
With this all said, it's still worth a read and I enjoyed the flash backs to other parts of his life and of course the ending. It also motivated me to exert some self control in my own life and push through my own small battles, instead of giving up and that is something!

Captivating from start to finish, even if you know the ok outcome of Colin's world first finish, you are with him in his strife and his achievements every leg of the way. at one point, I could picture the vast white of Antarctica and feel the weight of the sled. Loved it!

Excellent story of achievement and humility
Collin o'brady does a great job of describing both the highlights of his journey and the lessons that he learned as a man and as a person in achieving this great task. I would make this required reading if I could for high school seniors across America.I give it my highest recommendation.

The Impossible First -LOVED IT!!!
One of the best books I’ve ever read or listened to, hands down. I stumbled across Colin’s Instagram post on the day he had found his deep flow state, and I was intrigued. I didn’t know what it was all about but couldn’t wait to read about the whole adventure. The book is chock full of terrifying moments, failures, defeats, facing your fears, life lessons and soaring victories, as well as a love story to the outdoors and Colin’s wife and family, as well as everyone near & far who has supported him. This is an instant classic. Colin is impossible not to like, in his absolute earnestness and honesty. While Colin achieved his dream and set an incredible new world record, he also encourages everyone to figure out what their own impossible first or personal

Abit underwhelming
I am sure it is a pretty incredible achievement but it doesn't make for the best listen/read. If you have listened to Colin on various podcasts talk about this adventure, there isn't much point in buying the book in my opinion. I have also read the Nat Geo story and in my opinion it takes nothing away from this book.

Rudd's 'Endurance' is the better listen.
I enjoyed this. O'Brady did something incredible and he narrates it in an interesting, easy-to-absorb way. If you want a nice, enjoyable account of a polar trek this is exactly what you need. His trek across Antarctica was fascinating and I really enjoyed all the little insights into his nightly routine in the tent, etc.
I know there have been accusations levelled that O'Brady has severely embellished much of this, and offended many people in his ambition to force his way to the title. These may be true, though I was able to separate them from my listening experience.
My issue with the book, however, is that it pales agains Louis Rudd's 'Endurance'. Having listened to both, I found Endurance to be by far the richer listen, charting not only Rudd's military career, but his 3 expeditions to the South Pole, not just O'Brady's one. Rudd clearly has much greater experience and respect for the pole, and that comes across in every word. Much of this book was taken up with O'Brady rushing through his life story, as well as dwelling on the 'energy' he felt being sent to him.
Considering Rudd has always claimed that he wasn't racing, and O'Brady has always claimed that they were, I found O'Brady's fixation on Rudd in this book a little disconcerting. Not all of what he says adds up. Seemingly harmless encounters between the two in Rudd's book are over-analysed here to the point that Rudd is cast as a cold manipulator (I laughed aloud at how a friendly wave across the ice in Rudd's book was presented here as the latter "disturbingly" trying to psych O'Brady out) and I found the fact that O'Brady hacked Rudd's website to track his live location made him quite unlikable.
In conclusion, I found Rudd's book to be both a far superior account of the same event and Rudd to be a much more likeable, trustworthy narrator. I'd recommend you listen to 'Endurance' if you're considering this book, and only consider this one if you'd like to expand your insight into what happened on the ice in 2018.

Million times richer than any podcast
I’ve listened to every podcast of Colins and thought I might know the story already, but there is much richness to this that builds on already amazing tale. Would definitely recommend to any listener or follower.

Story
At the beginning of his memoir Life Lived Wild: Adventures at the Edge of the Map, Rick Ridgeway tells us that if you add up all his many expeditions, he’s spent over five years of his life sleeping in tents: “And most of that in small tents pitched in the world’s most remote regions.” It’s not a boast so much as an explanation. Whether at elevation or raising a family back at sea level, those years taught him, he writes, “to distinguish matters of consequence from matters of inconsequence.” He leaves it to his listeners to do the final sort of which is which.

Story
This is your wake-up call to resist the Hustle culture and embrace the slowness of Jesus. Our culture makes constant demands of us: Do more. Accomplish more. Buy more. Post more. Be more. In following these demands, we have indeed become more: More anxious. More tired. More hurt. More depressed. More frantic. What we are doing isn't working! In a society where hustle is the expectation, busyness is the norm and information is king, we have forgotten the fundamentals that make us human, anchor our lives, and provide meaning.
