Editorial reviews

Narrator Dikran Tulaine terrifically embodies the role of a grizzled storyteller recounting heroic deeds from the past, his voice layered with experience, shadows of regret, and pride. Homer's precursor to The Odyssey is set during the Trojan War, and this epic narrative tells of the battles and events during this period, such as the quarrel between King Agamemnon and the famous warrior Achilles, the death of Patroclus, and Achilles' revenge on Hector, as well as the involvement of the various gods and goddesses as they try to influence the battle to help their favorites. Tulaine's performance is superb, his smooth narration will draw listeners close and leave them enthralled with visions of glory in their heads.

Marvelous translation! Great audio narration!

First published in 1865, the faithful and incandescent rendering of Homer's Iliad by Edward, Earl of Derby is a pinnacle of the art of literary translation. Rather than attempt hexameters (a somewhat unnatural meter for English poetry), Derby used the verse form that best liberates the powers of the English language: blank verse. Invented by the genius Christopher Marlowe--who taught it to his roommate William Shakespeare--this is the meter of the strongest poetry in English. Derby is a master of both blank verse and Ancient Greek philology. Dikran Tulaine gives the best recitation of Homer in English I have ever heard, and I've heard quite a few. This is one of the best audiobooks ever made.

Classic

Homer's Iliad is a classic for a reason. This story of mythical gods, heroes, and war is very interesting. The translation seems to capture the heart of the epic poem.

The narrator does a great job. He brings the characters to life. His pitch, tone, and rhythm are pleasant.

There are some adult themes and detailed descriptions of violence. However, there is no cursing or reference to sex. I highly recommend this audiobook for teens and adults. Enjoy!
