Harvesting souls...

I loved this book!! PRN hottie, Midnight Gunn, was born during a solar eclipse and Hayley’s comet passing and has been gifted with both healing powers & being able to see inside minds. He has helped Arthur Gredge, of Scotland Yard in several cases and has been summoned again. This new case appears to be of the paranormal nature. Gunn rescues an orphan girl who had been attacked and heals her and becomes her legal guardian. As Gunn and Gredge race against the clock to catch a deranged killer, who is harvesting souls, will they do so before one of them is harmed? This is a fast paced PRN story w lots of excitement and intrigue...there is an HEA but is it truly over??

The Hollows

Where can I get the movie version of this book? This was good and it had me thinking of all the British mysteries I love. Someone please contact Netflix and tell them to make this into a series. Midnight Gunn has become one of my favorite male characters and I hope there are more books to come with him and Polly. I also hope the author gives him a love interest, he deserves it.

Now, I have to tell you that the narration was as good as the story. The narrator captured all the characters' nuances, quirks and personalities.  It is always a pleasure to listen to an audio book that has excellent narration because the experience becomes more than someone just reading a book to you. A good narrator makes the listener feel like they are in the story and experiencing everything the characters are experiencing.  Kudos to Helen Taylor for making Gunn come to life for me, and kudos to C L Monaghan for a brilliant story.

Fantastic reading of a thrilling story

Would you listen to The Hollows: A Midnight Gunn Novel again? Why?

Yes! I usually am against a narrator of the opposite gender to the main character but Helen did beautifully, narrating professionally, and altering her voice to fit the dialogue of whoever was speaking without being off-putting or awkward.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Polly! Helen did a great job imparting the little-girl style of speaking that was a lovely contrast to the severity of the story and main character.

What does Helen Taylor bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Helen brings the story to life! She makes the characters real humans, she raises the tension, heartens the words of love, adds little noises and tidbits to convey a mood. It was very easy to listen to the whole book at once because I didn't want to pause Helen in her story telling!

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Danger and death often lurks in the shadows... but not when Midnight Gunn is around to manipulate those shadows to his bidding.

Any additional comments?

Fantastic listen! I'm a hesitant audible user, but if every narrator and every book were like this, I'd be avid!

I really liked this one!

Great story!! Very different from anything I’ve read so far in the historical fiction genre. I didn’t want to put it down. The ending kept me on the edge of seat.
I thought Helen Taylor did a good job of narrating the story.
Can’t wait for the next one!

Fun listen

I enjoyed the mystery and lingering supernatural elements of this story. I'm not a hard-core historical reader, but I do like a well written period piece every once in a while. C.L. Monaghan gave just enough detail to take you back in time on an intriguing murder spree/hunt without suffocating you in era-specific stuff. I really liked the slightly dark, but relatable main character.

Though I prefer the sex of my narrators to be the sex of the main characters, I felt Helen Taylor was easy to listen to when voicing men. Her pacing was good, and she differeciated the characters pretty well.

Overall, The Hollows was a fun listen, and I'll likely continue listening to following books.

The Hollows

What a great listen! Helen did an amazing job telling this story and I just LOVE her accent! Now on to the book itself. I really enjoyed this story and to see Midnight solve such a mystery as well as grow himself. He learns a few valuable life lessons in here that can be learned from many. Such a happy ending, but it leaves you wanting more (not in a cliffhanger way, just in a I want more way). I will be looking for another Midnight book to see where his life leads him next.

not one I'd recommend<br />

stilted melodrama that postulates magic and people with unusual characteristics exist but never quite decides how normals should deal with it. characters bland cardboard puppets that have major life changing behavior that lacks development or background and result in stretching listeners' credulity to the max. won't be looking for another in this series.

In the Midnight hour, we want more, more, MORE!

I loved the book version of The Hollows, so I was intrigued as to how the novel would come across as an audiobook. I was not disappointed. This audio version is outstanding!

Helen Taylor's narration and attention to accents brings each character gloriously to life and enhances C.L. Monaghan's masterfully crafted tale beautifully. The variation and inflection of the voices of each character, in particular the growly rasp of the villain of the piece Spring-Heeled Jack made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end, immersing me into the story completely.

The Hollows is a tale of murder, mystery and magic set in London in 1860. Our hero, Midnight Gunn is a very special gent who was born during a solar eclipse as Halley's Comet blazed a trail across the sky, endowing him with supernatural powers that are both a blessing and a curse

Midnight uses his gifts to assist Detective Inspector Arthur Gredge in solving strange and unusual cases. Gredge is the only one aware of the extent of Midnights abilities, earning him the title of "Scotland Yards best kept secret".

The story finds Midnight and Gredge on the hunt for the notorious "Spring Heeled Jack", following the discovery of the body of a well-to-do young lady in a seedy part of the city As they follow the clues left behind and the number of victims rises, will they be able to uncover the true identity of this monster who is terrorising the streets of London and stop his killing spree for good?

The Hollows is an action packed tale of traditional gothic mystery, entwined with paranormal adventure. The characters are masterfully created and well researched, leaving us, the listener, wanting to know more about their back stories and taking us on a rollercoaster ride throughout - I was cheering for our heroes, but I also found myself wanting to to know more about the person behind Spring Heeled Jack…. In spite of their disturbing actions and behaviour, I wanted to understand their motives too.

So there you have it in a nutshell. The Hollows is recommended for age 16+, mainly because there is mild bad language, adult themes and necromancy. The Hollows is just the beginning of what promises to be a cracker of a series and I avidly look forward to Midnight Gunn's next adventure, and hopefully more of Helen Taylor's story-weaving narrative skills too.

Having read the book which was a great read, I decided to listen to the Audible, wasn't sure what to expect as I had never done this before. Wow it was so well narated, the characters were truly brought to life, kept me engaged throughout. Realised you don't always take in everything when reading but listening to the story I didn't miss a word. Well done author and narater.

Incredible

The hollows is an awe inspiring experience you feel like you are propelled back to 1860s london. The book is beautifully narrated by Helen Taylor her dramatisation of the characters is fantastic my favourite being little polly. I enjoyed reading the paperback but this audiobook takes it to another level I would recommend this book to anyone a thrilling read that you cannot put down. The book is also beautifully written by the author and cannot wait for the next instalment.
