How does the saying go? Just because you’re paranoid, it doesn’t mean they’re not out to get you....

For Ruth, a new mother recovering from postpartum psychosis, every day is difficult and, after months spent hearing voices in the walls and trusting no one, she’s no longer confident in her own judgement. Neither, it seems, is anyone else.

So, when she hears a scream from the local petrol station one night, she initially decides it must be her mind playing tricks again. The police, too, are polite but firm: she must stop calling them every time she thinks she hears something. And her husband is frustrated; he’d hoped Ruth was getting better at last.

Ruth can’t quite let it go.... What if there was a scream? What if it was someone in trouble? Someone who needs Ruth’s help?

Exploring the dark and isolating side of motherhood, the question at the heart of Rebecca Whitney's The Hidden Girls is how much you can help someone else when you can’t trust anyone – even yourself....

Utterly brilliant

This totally compelling psychological thriller will have you totally absorbed and on the edge of your seat. Beautifully written and brilliantly narrated I would highly recommend it - the vivid characters, imagery and intricate plot will stay with you for days. A remarkable writer who will make you bite your nails off, shed tears and enlarge your heart in equal measures .

...until you finish this terrific book. It’s central character ,Ruth, is a first-time mother recovering from a terrifying episode of post-partum psychosis, coupled with unresolved guilt about the death of her sister. In this fragile and apparently illogical frame of mind, with nobody prepared properly to help or even believe her, she is drawn into the activities of a criminal gang of great nastiness and murderous cunning. Subtly and superbly voiced by Kristin Atherton, it is paralysingly gripping: I listened to it today and did nothing else at all.

Couldn't Get Into It

Sorry,I got to Chapter 4 and I still wasn't feeling it. I couldn't see where it was going and my mind kept drifting off elsewhere as the story wasn't holding me a all. Had to return it.

Fantastic Narrator

I picked this book because I love Kristin Atherton as a narrator. I felt the book jumped a lot from following a story that didn’t seem to reach a climax and then ended with an anti-climax. I still think Kristen Atherton is a fantastic narrator but the end of this book was a huge disappointment. Rubys husband was a painful character who made me feel very uncomfortable at times with the way he spoke to her and dealt with her paranoia then he just seemed to disappear from the story.

Felt like going nowhere

I thought I would like it during the first few chapters but it took a long time to get anywhere and when it did it was an anti climax. None of the twists were that exciting and I became frustrated at the treatment and focus of the main character’s illness.
