I disliked virtual voice. It was dull and lifeless. Places wherev you'd expect emotion were totally devoid of any. Even knowing this was an artificial voice it fell flat (literally) a lot of the time. It needs lots of work to satisfy the listening ear.

This s the first book I've read using the AI voice thing (far as I know). Overall, I found it just fine. An occasional slight fade (as if a human had slightly leaned a few inches farther from the microphone while reading), the occasional mispronunciation (for example, "the criminals MO" - properly said it would sound like "criminals M. O." The AI pronounced it as "the criminals mow", like mowing a lawn. Not the end of the world, and halfway through this collection I've only caught 8–9 of those mispronounced words or abbreviations.

What I have found quite irritating are the deliberately mispronounced words. Pardon the crudiry, but every time one of the bad guy's says the word "f*ck", it is pronounced "foog". "Sh*t' comes out as "shee". We're all grownups here, and this is a pretty dark genre, so why this adolescent nonsense?

Other than these quibbles, I'm quite enjoying this series.

Annoying word substitutions

I started listening to this without expecting much, solely because I had read some good reviews, but boy, it surely delivers. The virtual voice narrator isn't that bad; it definitely lacks the emotion needed for such a thrilling novel, but the story is good enough that you'll still feel engaged. A must-listen; the story is compelling and won't leave you hanging.

I like the story ideas, but the auto-generated narration (AI or whatever) isn’t bad, but it has little emotional impact on the story. Everything is read with the same inflections. Lines that should be emphasized, sped up, slowed down, etc. aren’t. There also is no change of voices for different characters. Not a fan of AI narration.

Good stories; meh narration

I enjoyed the story overall. while the AI was at a higher level than other books that I have listened to, it still is not as good as someone reading the book.

the originality of the story
