Publisher's Summary

In her inimitable style, Viola Shipman explores the unlikely relationship between two very different women brought together by the pain of war, but bonded by hope, purpose...and flowers.

Iris Maynard lost her husband in World War II, her daughter to illness, and, finally, her reason to live. Walled off from the world for decades behind the towering fence surrounding her home, Iris has built a new family...of flowers. Iris propagates her own daylilies and roses while tending to a garden filled with the heirloom starts that keep the memories of her loved ones alive.

When Abby Peterson moves next door with her family - a husband traumatized by his service in the Iraq War and a young daughter searching for stability - Iris is reluctantly yet inevitably drawn into her boisterous neighbor’s life, where, united by loss and a love of flowers, she and Abby tentatively unearth their secrets, and help each other discover how much life they have yet to live.

With fascinating detail, Viola Shipman's heartwarming story will charm listeners while resonating with issues that are so relevant today.

Heartwarming story but...

There were too many "he said she said" in this version. Perhaps the written version doesn't include those. Other than that I enjoyed the book.

Awful

This was so overwrought, saccharine, and totally unrealistic that I felt like I needed to wash and brush my teeth. One of the narrators is the worst I’ve ever heard. Her voice is like fingernails on a chalkboard, ridiculously over dramatic for the adult, and grating and insulting for the little girl. I couldn’t finish - it made me want to gag.

Wow

This is a wonderful story spanning a Heritage Garden. Words can't describe how much this book shares of the loss of war. I will never look at my garden the same again. A wonderful book!

Audible vs Hard Copy

I read this book just after the release in 2020 and loved the characters, the setting, the premise of the entire novel. Reading brought out the true emotional factor. After listening with Audible, I found the book coming alive along with my curious inner gardener. I knew what to expect, but having experienced both versions I found each enjoyable in their own right.

Not my “usual” genre, but LOVED this book.

The balance of life. The good & the bad. The hope & despair. All come alive in this amazing story of history, friendship, and beautiful colors. Highly recommend.

SUPERB Story

As always, Viola Shipman's beautiful way with words takes you through every emotion expertly. The story itself was perfection. I didn't care for the delivery of the reader who read Abby's parts, however. She overpronounced words and made it feel rather mechanical, which I didn't enjoy at all. However, overall it was well worth the listen.

Gardeners will love this book!

Perfect gardener's novel! Loved all the botanical details through the seasons and throughout Iris's lifetime. Multigenerational highlights enhance it. Really sweet story. But I was annoyed over and over by the voice of Abby. She was a strong character profile, so why did the reader perform as though she might cry any minute? Also, each character could sometimes be another voice, which was distracting.
