Editorial reviews

Why we think it's Essential: If you've seen the Tom Hanks movie, you know this is a great story. But do yourself a favor and listen to it. Frank Muller, chosen to narrate by King himself, turns each character into flesh and blood with the pitch and pacing of his voice. I spent a Saturday with my headphones on because I couldn't turn off the story before finishing it. (I apologize for my rudeness to the person who called me that afternoon. You couldn't have known that I was dealing with life and death issues.) — Beth Anderson

Publisher's summary

Hear this history-making serial novel - from cliffhanger to cliffhanger - in its entirety. When it first appeared, one volume per month, Stephen King's The Green Mile was an unprecedented publishing triumph: all six volumes ended up on the New York Times best seller list - simultaneously - and delighted millions of fans the world over.

Welcome to Cold Mountain Penitentiary, home to the Depression-worn men of E Block. Convicted killers all, each awaits his turn to walk the Green Mile, keeping a date with "Old Sparky," Cold Mountain's electric chair. Prison guard Paul Edgecombe has seen his share of oddities in his years working the Mile. But he's never seen anyone like John Coffey, a man with the body of a giant and the mind of a child, condemned for a crime terrifying in its violence and shocking in its depravity. In this place of ultimate retribution, Edgecombe is about to discover the terrible, wondrous truth about Coffey, a truth that will challenge his most cherished beliefs...and yours.

Exceptional

This was a terrific audio book. The characters were well drawn, thestory was riveting and moving and nearly brought tears to my eyes, and the narration was flawless. I have never read nor listened to Stephen King before, and was very dubious about this book, but I was very, very pleased that I downloaded it.

Dont pass this one by!

What a GREAT audible book this is!! Take a really great story and match it with the perfect narrator and you get one of those magical stories youll never forget. Its like a multifaceted diamond. This book is what turned me on to king. I thought all his books where horror but thats not so, and its unfortunate that I always had that perception. If you loved this book than you must get the movie which is a masterpiece! and at 3hrs is able to stay true to the book for the most part and what very little has been changed was masterfully done for the better! I got the non blue ray special edition which has a TON of really great special features. Audible and movie magic! Top recommendation.

Awwwww, Frank Muller, you were the best!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Frank Muller's performance is so magnificent, it's a whole different level of story-telling.!

What does Frank Muller bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He breathed life into it! Better than the movie. Plus there are far more details in the book than can be brought into a film.

A touching story of love

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This is a beautiful story with interesting characters. The reader is one of the best I have ever heard. It is the story of 1932 death row prison, the guards and the prisoners. A new prisoner comes on the block who is very large with a special gift.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Green Mile?

When Koffee says that the two girls died for love of each other. I had read this story years ago but that line and the explanation behind it has never left me.

What about Frank Muller’s performance did you like?

Frank's performance could not have been better. His use of voice volume, articulating each word, and not rushing a scene were frosting on the cake to a great story.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The story is touching and moved me with the power that empathy has for the characters.

Another Classic By King

What made the experience of listening to The Green Mile the most enjoyable?

I watched the movie years ago. It was interesting to compare the book to the movie.

What other book might you compare The Green Mile to and why?

There is no comparison to The Green Mile. It has a truly unique storyline. Stylistically it is vary comparable to the rest of Stephen Kings books. King is a true master of character development.

What does Frank Muller bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He adds a voice and emotion, but if you have seen the movie it is impossible not to compare the narration with the movie.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It didn't make me laugh or cry but it did make me think a lot.

Any additional comments?

This is a fantastic book. If you have seen the movie, the book adds depth to the characters that was very fascinating.

A Heart Warming Yet Sad Story

Where does The Green Mile rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

The Green Mile is not my favorite of all the books I have either read or listened to by far, however it is a good story and I don't feel I wasted my money by purchasing it. Sorry, I can't give you a rank thou.

What other book might you compare The Green Mile to and why?

I have not read anything that I really can compare to The Green Mile. I found it to be original, but then again I have not read over 500 books in my lifetime....

Which scene was your favorite?

I find this question hard to answer but I suppose I better get used to it when filling out these review formats. There were several favorite scenes, but that of Percy pissing his pants made me let out a "well, you deserved it son of a b*tch" sort of a smile.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, but once again work and showering got in the way. I managed to listen to it in less than 48 hours thou. Had it not been for the empty refrigerator and a trip to the grocery store I would have listened to it in less time.

Any additional comments?

For once, the movie is very close to the book. So if you have seen the movie you might want to save a credit and rent this one from your public library. The narrator is fine, but just fine not great. The way he dragged his words at the end of every sentence reminded me of an accent I have heard before maybe from the south but I am not sure. Not unpleasant by any means, just different and tired...tired from living too long perhaps.

This is one of the best stories ever written!!!

From start to finish this is a masterpiece! I wouldn't change anything and I loved every minute of it.

Frank Muller reads it beautifully, acting out each part with deep enthusiasm and understands the importance of becoming the character.

The production is top notch.

Most of all, thank you to Stephen King for yet once again creating a feeling from his words that runs so deep that you laugh out loud with the humor and cry with deep real sadness, as well as happiness.

Thank you!
