Publisher's summary

War is hell, especially when you’re surrounded by enemies.

With the king of Garenland dead and the people eager for revenge, Otto and Wolfric turn their sights north to Garenland’s ancient enemy Straken.

The Northern Army marches into enemy territory, while back in the capital, Otto rushes to train as many war wizards as he can.

Outside forces refuse to leave them alone, and Otto is forced to deal with an ever-growing array of foes, unreliable allies, and an enemy that will do anything to see Garenland fall.

Can Otto overcome threats, both internal and external, to bring the war to a victorious close?

Did es need to disappoint!

Great second installment! Can't wait to start the third book! Normally I listen while commuting, I've been binging this listening at the computer and while resting.

An easy recommendation

I really do enjoy the fact that the main character isn’t a “good guy@ and the fact the book shows how honor can be a detriment. The characters do act like people and does include leaps of logic and emotional reasoning. The biggest problem with this book is sometimes the dialog is stiff or stilted.

Good Series

The first book started off slow building the background. But once built the storyline, characters and narration was great.

Too Short

So far I am enjoying the series. Yes Otto(¿) makes things too easy, but unlike others he had some training beforehand. With that knowledge it’s easy to see why.

My main issue with everything so far is that this “reads” like an a bridged version. I would love each book to be two or three times longer. Similar to other authors I’ve been listening to.

Over all, there is just a lack of deft to each book.

But still planning to finish!

Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely

!Possible spoilers! Depending on perspective!

I just finished the 2nd book of this series. The first book I enjoyed thoroughly I thought it was going to be about a man who stays humble even after gaining power. Which is what was happening 3/4(?) of the way through the first book before what his wife did to him. After that it went down hill and at the end of the 1st book after the confrontation with his wife I thought he would get better in the 2nd book.

Now that I have finished the 2nd book, I don't think I will continue with the series. Other reviews mention dark content and an anti-hero perspective which is why I gave the series a try. I don't think there is dark content in this book or maybe I am used to reading much darker books so my perspective is off from what the general public might feel. I also disagree with him being an anti-hero, for as the 2nd book continued I get more of an origin story for a villain (due to some possible forshadowing) . Which isn't what I was looking for when picking up this book.

I also want to mention that it seems a little much to me that his wife "betraying" him to fuel this personality change is a little much. The MC seemed intelligent enough to let it go after his pay back, since he admits he didn't want the marriage either. He gave it a shot with little intentions anyway, it failed and for some reason it made his whole personality change. Just seemed a little reaching to make a humble guy become a villian.

P.S Again good book, just not what I was looking for at this time. If I want to read about a villian ill most likely pick this series back up.
