Publisher's summary

Imagine...growing up in an unfinished geodesic dome home with no heat or running water, wearing the same clothes to school every day, and eating breakfast cereal with warm goat milk. In this whimsical, poetic, and gripping autobiographical account, Jennifer Asbenson describes her abusive, dysfunctional, and chaotic upbringing, her abduction and escape from a serial killer, her years in and out of mental hospitals, her decision to heal herself, and ultimately, her path to wholeness. Jennifer tells how, from her youngest years, she learned to retreat into her imagination to develop the ability to survive. The Girl in the Treehouse is a profoundly compelling story, told with humor, honesty, and without self-pity, of Jennifer’s emergence from mental illness and despair to happiness, through the power of forgiveness and self-love.

The horror this girl went through....

I listened to this audiobook while mowing and literally had to stop a few times in disbelief at how this girl's parents AND the authorities completely & utterly failed this young woman, especially that piece of garbage mother of hers. The authorities should be deeply ashamed of themselves as well. Jennifer is a strong, courageous woman who did nothing to deserve the trauma of abusive parents and then being ignored by law enforcement.

Unbelievable

Showed what faith can do to cary a person through the darkest hours of life to the light.

Excellent Memoir with Great Narration

This was a story that taught me a lot about about mental illness and children who live in poverty and neglect. It is well written and the narration was excellent. I was engaged throughout the entire audio book and was in suspense about several different parts throughout.

Overall a good story

This is overall a good story.
The author did go through a lot in her childhood and as a young adult. The story is well told in the beginning but then as the book goes along the writing style seems to change and not in a positive way.
The writing tends to go off on tangents sometimes and can be hard to follow. The details at times get lost.

The narration is very poor for this book. There are so many obvious corrections and dubbed lines. The narrator tends to overdramatize some parts that don’t need to be

Great memoir

Wonderful memoir but the tone of the narrarator was so distracting. Her tone did not match the content. It would’ve been a better read than listen.

Inspiring, empowering and soul enriching!

Excellent book! Well told, not unnecessarily wordy, and not written at all from a place of victimization, even though it had every reason to be. I love the author's strength, conviction, and unwillingness to allow her painful childhood and ensuing horrific circumstances determine the outcome of her life. I also really enjoyed the narrator. She has a talent for allowing the reader to believe they are truly hearing the author tell her story. This book was never dull for one moment.

High School girl level story

This is a woman who has not grown up and who writes like she is in high school. I was not impressed.
