New York Times bestselling author John Connolly pits Parker against two separate—but vitally connected—investigations, which prove to be among the most complicated of his entire career in this “must-read for the author’s fans and a good introduction to the series for newbie” (Booklist).
In The Sisters Strange, criminal Raum Buker arrives in Portland, only for a shocking act of theft to threaten not only his own existence but those of his former lovers—the enigmatic sisters Strange.
And in the title novel, The Furies, Parker must protect two women under threat as Portland shuts down in the face of a global pandemic. But it may be that those clients are more capable of taking care of themselves than anyone could have imagined.

Reseñas de la Crítica
"Jeff Harding clearly shows the passion he has for narration with this production, which includes two novels. In Portland, Maine, private investigator Charlie Parker is surrounded by criminals and supernatural forces. The plots are separate, though several of the characters are in both storylines. The first work centers around stolen coins, while the second revolves around a pair of criminals who are extorting a woman whose young daughter has died. The characters invite intriguing personalities, and Harding delivers with unique voices. It seems like most of the folks in both stories are evil, and Harding shapes them with the demonic, harsh, or impatient voices they deserve. This is for those who like their thrillers with a dose of noir and/or the supernatural."

The first story is called "The Sisters Strange". We are back into the world of Charlie Parker and he is asked by a friend of one of his acquaintances to help him with a personal issue. This friend - Will - has been dating Dolors Strange and all of a sudden, she has backed away from the relationship and told Will that she can no longer see him. Unfortunately, Will is aware that she once had a relationship with an ex-convict named Raum Buker and since he is suddenly back in town, he feels like that may not be purely "by choice" from Dolors. Add to that the fact that she also has a sister who has been involved with Raum in the past (and appears to ALSO taking him back) things become a very little bit complicated.
As we have come to expect from this series....things are not always what they seem. Yes, Raum Buker is back in town, but he has come out of his prison sentence with a couple of new things and one of those is a tattoo of a pentagram that he can not stop scratching. The other is the people that he has chosen to surround himself with - both inside of prison and outside.
Fans of this series will immediately understand that there is something causing this and poor Charlie Parker.....it seems as if these things just always pull him in. Fans immediately realize the supernatural aspect of the events going on and unfortunately, Charlie is all to familiar with the possibilities. He does his best to investigate the information given to him and to try to keep the "innocents" from being harmed. So very typical of Charlie Parker...*sigh* (When will he learn???)
The second story deals with a case of two very bad criminals who have stolen the belongings of a mother (all having to do with her young daughter who died in a horrible accident - i.e. her baby teeth, favorite stuffed animals, etc) who are now trying to blackmail her for $50,000 to give her back the items that they stole.. Unfortunately, this woman is also the widow of an AWFUL (made) man who double crossed the mob, turned out to be a serial killer and was just downright a completely AWFUL human being. Because of all of these facts, she doesn't really have anyone to turn to ....hence her attempt to ask for help from Charlie Parker.
This story brings in a little more of the "supernatural" world because all of a sudden one of the bad guys is constantly hearing a child's voice in the middle of the night. If that were not bad enough, other people also hear the sounds. The bad guys are staying in a motel that Parker has described to us in the past (it has its quirks)
This book is written in the time period of March 2020 when people were having to deal with the fact that the world was changing and the fact that lockdowns might be on the horizon. They haven't occurred yet, but I have to admit, it made me think about the very different issues that people may have had to think about as the world was beginning to shut down. Definitely an interesting prerogative to think about....
I love the fact that we got to see Louis and Angel in this one. To me, that always adds to the likeability factor of this series.
This book had two different stories, yet they both were taking place in the same timeframe. Can it be read as a stand alone? Absolutely. In case, probably this one more than the others. Will the reader REALLY get the nuances and the understanding of what is REALLY going on? Nope. Absolutely not.
Seriously, we are 20 books in to this series and there are so many details, relationships, nuances and just plain history that help to make this story what it is. Was this my favorite book in this series? Nope. Not by a long shot, but it held my interest and kept me invested in it through out the story.
So -not the wait for book 21 begins.....
