It starts in the desert. John the prophet lowers Jesus under the Jordan’s muddy waters and pulls him up, just as a bird swoops down to skim the river’s surface.
It spreads next to Galilee, where some welcome Jesus as a disciple of John and others grow wary of his rising influence - fishermen are leaving their nets, tax collectors their offices, and students their masters to listen to this new saint.
After abandoning his nets, Andrew ties knots in the threads of his shirt to remember Jesus’ teachings. After escaping his slum, Judas waits for Jesus to call down the legions of angels who can end a broken world.
But just as Jesus’ movement in the north is gaining strength, he turns south toward the Temple and a fate his followers will struggle to understand.

Stunning writing; healing portayal
This is now my favorite portrayal of the life of Christ. It was gentle, powerful storytelling with wonderful character integrity. The research poured into this was obvious in the details, and in the political and social themes that ran through the story, turning all to a slightly diffetent angle for a fresh look at Christ and His disciples. The voice (both "writing" voice and the voice that narrates) is tender and compelling. I was sad to finish.

a good book
narration is good enough, for such a hearty tale , I would prefer a heartier more emotional narration, more passionate, and the story is good

Great book but terrible narration.
Oh dear! I love this book and was so glad to see it finally made into an audiobook. But then I started listening and the narration was really disappointing. Very sing-song-y and slow. I even checked the speed setting in my app to make sure it wasn't turned down. Really, authors should not do the narration for their own books. It almost never turns out well. I'm really sad about this one.
