One act of courage can change the world.

The year is 2048. Climate change and bio-warfare have ravaged much of the Earth, and societal meltdown has splintered the US into fragments. But out of the ruins, Northern California has built a thriving culture based on respect for the four sacred things: air, fire, water and earth.

The Fifth Sacred Thing is an epic tale of freedom and slavery, love and war, and the potential futures of humankind. It tells of a 21st century California clan caught between two clashing worlds: one based on tolerance, the other on repression. It is both a love story between two people and a war story between two opposing ideals.

this story is outrageously enchanting! I loved every moment of it. starhawk combines all of the things I love most in a story - fantasy, philosophy, hopefulness and love. vividly brought to life by Maya Lilly (I love thay they're two wonderful characters within the story too!) her ability to jump between characters dazzled me. I finished it, and then three days later, I finished it again. highly recommend x

I truly loved this book. I’d read it a while ago but forgotten how great it is. Was sad when it ended and wishing her follow up novels were on audible.

Wonderful story! It takes you on a journey with well developed characters. I appreciated the connection to nature and humanity. The author ties in aspects of permaculture and holistic care. Narrator did a great job adjusting voice to match characters. I now consider one of my favs and would definitely listen again.
