Inspired by The Hobbit and begun in 1937, The Lord of the Rings is a trilogy that J.R.R. Tolkien created to provide "the necessary background of history for Elvish tongues". From these academic aspirations was born one of the most popular and imaginative works in English literature.

The Fellowship of the Ring, the first volume in the trilogy, tells of the fateful power of the One Ring. It begins a magnificent tale of adventure that will plunge the members of the Fellowship of the Ring into a perilous quest and set the stage for the ultimate clash between the powers of good and evil.

In this splendid, unabridged audio production of Tolkien's great work, all the inhabitants of a magical universe – hobbits, elves, and wizards – step colorfully into life. Rob Inglis' narration has been praised as a masterpiece of audio.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Fellowship of the Ring to be better than the print version?

This is the best! Rob Ingles is excellent. His performance is as if JRR Tolkien was reading it himself.

What did you love best about The Fellowship of the Ring?

I love this story for it's timelessness, and I love seeing how other stories across the decades have been inspired by it.

Would you be willing to try another one of Rob Inglis’s performances?

No. While I felt he was a good fit for the story, I still found him incredibly boring.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, much like the Fellowships journey, I wanted it to go on and just savor it.

Not enjoying the narrator

I know that Audible has been waiting for this book a long time in the US and it is worth the wait! The narration is excellent - including the singing - and Rob Inglis does a great job differentiating each character without becoming comical.

If you love the series then this is the version to get especially since it syncs with Kindle.

Any additional comments?

This is by far the most exciting, most literate, most frightening, most elevating, most imaginative, most humane story ever written. If you have only seen the film, well, too bad. All that remains to be said is that Rob Inglis' narration is masterful. If you have only one credit, use it here.

The story than which there is no greater

I have listened to this probably five times over the last four years, and it never gets old! Tolkien is my favorite author and getting to hear his work in this format is always a wonderful experience. The narrator is excellent, and, obviously, I love the story itself. I firmly believe that everyone should read (or listen to it) at least once in their lifetime!
