Publisher's Summary

A toxic will plays havoc in the lives of three generations of women when they discover they have been living a lie. A keenly observed story of the danger of secrets, the legacy of betrayal, and the power of family from a best-selling Australian author.

Sometimes an ending is really a beginning...

Felicity Lewis' 50th birthday party in her newly renovated home, loving husband and daughter Greta by her side, is going off with a bang when disaster strikes. Her father, Franklyn, with his usual impeccable timing, has keeled over and died.

For some members of the family, his wife Hazel, for example, Franklyn's death is not the great loss it first appears to be. But when his toxic and inexplicable will is read out, it becomes clear that long-buried secrets are about to surface, starting with the astonishing reappearance of Hazel's long-lost sister.

Indeed, Franklyn's death sets in motion a chain of events that will cause three generations of Gifford family women to question everything they hold dear - their relationships, their loyalties, even their identities. Until, that is, they choose to fight back against their dark inheritance...

A clever, sympathetic, and thought-provoking look at how a legacy of lies can seep through the generations and poison all it touches, and how the truth can set you free.

Grabbed me in from the start

It’s rare for me to listen to an audiobook and feel like I can identify with the characters in any way, but this one drew me in. The setting felt familiar and the family issues where a bullying father created untold angst within a family of women came to life. Sometimes I didn’t want to get out of my car to see what was happening next. A gorgeous story that needed to be told for all those grappling with the idea of an inheritance.

Poignant family saga

The story intrigued me and the minute I heard the narrator I was hooked the voice was so beautifully Australian I could imagine the people and the beaches and everything else that was discussed. I was a teenager in the 70s and it’s saddens me to hear what happened to Girls who fell pregnant in those days. There is also lots of joy in the story and forgiveness I really enjoyed listening to it

Wow!! I couldn't get enough!

I live in Marion Bay where one of the main characters lives, which drew me to the book.

The storyline was brilliant, I loved hearing about all of their stories, and relating to some of their issues, and how they worked through them. I loved that you heard from all three generations in the family. It truly was a heart-warming story, which no boring bits at all!

I can't recommend this book enough!

I wasn’t familiar with Tricia Stringer but will definitely look for more of her books now. I really enjoyed the way the characters developed as the story progressed.

This Story has it All!

Beautifully written and narrated. I'll definitely be reading another of this author's books. The acknowledgements were particularly important too.

A pleasant story

The story is pleasant and I love the “decency” of it. No swearing or cheap sex.
It was a bit long. I would prefer to have had less repetitive “thinking” of the characters.

Great Australian contemp family story.

Recommend! Really enjoyed this book that is a good example of the ways in which families can implode for any reason and members can deceive, betray and hurt those they love the most. The inheritance theme is cleverly woven through in various ways as we follow this family in crisis.
