Publisher's Summary

When South African conservationist Lawrence Anthony was asked to accept a herd of "rogue" wild elephants on his Thula Thula game reserve in Zululand, his common sense told him to refuse. But he was the herd's last chance of survival: they would be killed if he wouldn't take them.

In order to save their lives, Anthony took them in. In the years that followed he became a part of their family. And as he battled to create a bond with the elephants, he came to realize that they had a great deal to teach him about life, loyalty, and freedom.

The Elephant Whisperer (Young Readers Adaptation) is a heartwarming, exciting, funny, and sometimes sad account of Anthony's experiences with these huge yet sympathetic creatures. Set against the background of life on an African game reserve, with unforgettable characters and exotic wildlife, it is a delightful book that will appeal to animal lovers and adventurous souls everywhere.

Elephants are fascinating! Such a great listen

Recommended by a friend, this one is a treasure. I love elephants, I love that they are family oriented and I love that they remember. This story of a conservationist and how he befriended a herd of elephants is very touching. Elephants should always have their family around them. The Narrator added so much to this story, his accent made me think he this story was his own. Such a great listen

A story with such heart!

My book club read this book a number of years ago and loved it. Very evocative. Then just a month ago I heard a news story about elephants and it reminded me of Lawrence Anthony and his heroic elephant story. I ordered it on Audible and have been captivated as my dog and I walk the neighborhood. Truly a heartwarming, important story about these powerful gentle giants. Thank you for a wonderful presentation!

I Love Elephants!

It's funny what happens when you start researching a book you are writing. I have an elephant in my story, and he tells another character that his favorite book is... Well, that meant I needed to find a book for him to refer to. I looked up elephant books on Amazon, and this one came up. I chose the Audible version because I had a credit waiting for my next listen. I am not sure it is my character elephant's favorite book. But I did enjoy it as my night read.

Simon Vance did a great job narrating this autobiography. His voice is believable as the author's own, I suppose. I don't know what the author sounded like, as my guess is the author passed before finishing the book. That was a little jarring.

The author shared his experiment by having a place for a herd to come and live. He shared his getting to know the elephants' personalities personally. All in all, I did enjoy the story. I just need an elephant book more personal to the elephant and not the human. I did have my guy like Dumbo. But I need more.

If you love elephants, you will love this book.

Weak and Too Sentimental

The author wants it both ways: humans should embrace nature and respect animals. Instead he uses electric fences, infantilises the elephants in “cute” interchanges, and uses them as a prop in his preserve for tourists. His desire to show a real friendship with his elephants just seems hokey. Did not enjoy the book.

A wonderful look at these amazing creatures!

What I found most fascinating about this wonderful book is the sometimes successful attempts on the part of the author to communicate with elephants. It's well-written and extremely well narrated!
