They Run Together After a While

The storyline is almost aways the same, just like this series. These things are variations of the same formula; Super smart or super brave, or super capable or super something guy or gal gets in a predicament or is called upon by his or her government, or super secret agency or faltering boozed-up buddy, or whatever, to find or fix or save something or other. It seems like writers in this genre want to be the next Tom Clancy. Well boys and girls, a little dose of reality - they aren't. I am not saying brother Watts here is a bad read. He is average. I am saying the problem is that the genre is stale.

Add to that, usually the voice actor has trouble with pronuciation or something that doing a little bit more homework would have fixed. They are universally good voice technicians. Most are very talented people. Certainly they are better than I would be. But sometimes they sound like they are winging it.

edge of your seat thriller

I thought this story would be a run of the mill USA vs China story, which in part it is, but there is so much more. there are a few places twist worthy of admiration for the author. this story did not end up where I thought I would and that is a very good thing. now excuse me, I have to buy the next book... happy listening!

Alan

Very well written and presented. Watts is Clancy’s replacement as king of this type of story.

The narrator needs to buy a dictionary!

The story is good, but the narrator is destroying it. He doesn't know how to pronounce littoral and thermos, both of which appear in the narrative numerous times, it is highly distracting and almost painful to listen to. And if you are going to narrate names and places in other languages, do your homework and ensure you pronounce them properly. Kaneohe bay, Hawaii is not pronounced "Cane-Hoe" it is pronounced like "Connie-oh-ee". Seriously, who is the producer? Do they even monitor the narration? I am going to write the author.

narrator did so much better for book 4

still some very strange pronunciations of words, politburo, etc. and some obvious lack of homework/ knowledge of military equipment: it's a Virginia Class sub, not a Virgin Class! and a few others, but overall pretty good.

loved the story cant wait to read book 5

narrator has hard time expressing stressed voices

lots of action in this installment, narrator struggles to make desperation and stress believeable but that doesnt really detract from the story.

Different approach to war and highly believable.

Different approach to war and highly believable. By that I mean the build up to war, the initial attacks etc are not the norm but the way this is written makes it just as likely, maybe more so, than the standard “USA drawn into a war” approach.

Narration was also excellent, really bringing the characters and action to life.

Definitely read/listen to this but I would highly recommend reading the preceding books in the series, rather than jumping in here.
