Publisher's Summary

Whatever has happened to you, it is not who you are.

The world may know Chris Duffin as the "mad scientist of strength", but you wouldn't have ever guessed that if you saw the scrawny kid skinning rattlesnakes and chasing dragonflies in the early '80s. The story of his unconventional life will take you from gripping tales of murder, trauma, heartbreak, and survival deep in the Pacific Northwest wilderness all the way to an idealization of the self-made man - still flawed, but never broken.

In The Eagle and the Dragon, you'll follow one man's journey into the darkness of his own heart and witness the transformation of alcoholism, pain, and defeat into vision, character, and victory. Through Chris's powerful self-realization, you'll see how the human spirit can be either shackled by circumstance or freed from it.

Are you ready to walk through the fire and make your vision a reality?  This audiobook will show you how.

Meh..

I enjoyed reading this biography but, the thing about it that i didn’t care for is it lacks any sort of real emotion or feeling. It feels very blah the whole time your reading it. The stories he tells are mildly entertaining, they are life lessons of failure that leads to success. Like I said the book is okay but, he never reAlly dives into any feelings other than skin level.

Motivated

This book is a huge inspiration. Even if I didn’t grow up under such severe conditions I feel I can relate. I will definitely recommend this book to a few friends.

A door to an extraordinary life

Us humans are used to transmit ideas through stories. This is a most unusual story of somebody who for most of us, it would be difficult to connect with. I can imagine that it must have been difficult to put it out, and even then after reading the story I feel like I have no idea about what is like to be under Chris' skin. If you're in for the effort though, you won't be disappointed. I think there's nothing boring here, nothing mediocre, not a single chapter. There are of course pretty dark episodes too, but I like how Chris tries to extract lessons from everything and also tries to adapt it so that the reader can extract a lesson too, one way or another.

Incredible

A must read! This book and Chris’s life blew me away. I love learning about people and Chris has a story unlike anyone I have ever read about or know. I stumbled upon this book while shopping for a Kabuki Strength Boomstick and I am so happy I did.

meh

Don't get me wrong this book outlines an incredible journey of the author. But I thought it was a " self development" book while it was actually an autobiography. It's an easy listen and the author does a good job of keeping your attention. However, the business and exercise advice that he does get in to are minimal and I've heard more other books that get more in depth. I recommend if you like a good rags to riches story though.

Powerful

Forewarning: Don’t read (or listen) to this book if you enjoy mindlessly walking through life. Chris’s origin story has the makings of what could easily be a sad, lonely life if not for his powerful drive to turn his obstacles into strengths, and strengths into legendary achievements. I feel I am a better person for having read this. It’s a book that makes you want to get off the couch and make something happen. I guarantee you won’t be the same upon completion.

inspirational as hell!

I loved how Mr. Duffin challenges readers to look within themselves to determine what matters and what they truly value in life. then he engages readers in provoking questions that stimulate action towards living a life based on values. this book helped me at a tough time in my professional life having started a business just before the Corona virus pandemic. thanks mad scientist for sharing your wisdom and vulnerable parts of your life.

lifes tough...what of it

@mad_scientist_duffin thank you for this book. A part of and witness to many things that would leave most people a shell of themselves for the duration of their lives, but learning to thrive... to say the least. It doesn't offer itself as 'self help' but it challenges you to ask who, what and why you are who you are. I think it offers ultimate perspective to anyone unsure of their position in this world from someone who's asked that question to themselves repeatedly to near ultimate intent. It will help those who feel that they are bound by their past some clarity in relinquishing that notion and suggests quite concisely if you fine tune aspects of your life and focus you can achieve so much more than you ever thought you were capable of.

A little disappointed

I have known about the author for a while now and followed his podcast too. The book is alright and no doubt Chris has had an interesting and varied life. If you read a lot of personal development books you will have already heard a lot if not everything of the examples that Chris speaks about. Resilience, planning, cutting out negative people from your life are the main messages which you can find in most books of this genre. There is no real tools to take away from this book, just Chris's life examples that somehow you have to link to your own.

Empowering read

The eagle and the dragon are such powerful metaphors that Chris has created and lived out - he has generously shared his story, one complete with themes and lessons that the rest of us, even if we don’t share complete circumstances, are able to learn from. As a strength athlete, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Chris’ passion for lifting - there isn’t much well-written literature, particularly in a biographical fashion, of this nature - any fellow lifters will relate to the appeal to the iron he speaks of.
