Not an example we should follow
The principals, based on Mr Gerber’s work, is sound. However, I have a major problem with the ethics of Mr Goodrich. Here’s why.
In chapter 18 Ken talks about growth. He talks about a contractor that had passed away in his area. So he wonders if the number is active, so he calls and gets a message. Long story short he gets a copy of the death certificate and takes it down to the phone company to prove the man died, buys the number for $7, and before he gets back to the office gets a call on the number asking if that $7,000 quote was still good, to which he replies “yes”.
He then goes in to brag that he made not just $7,000 but millions from buying that number for $7.
He does not mention calling the family to see how they are. He does not mention offering to buy the number from whoever may be grieving and has not even thought about the business at all. This is not illegal but is very unethical and in my opinion not an example that anyone should follow.
Maybe he in fact did reach out to the family. Maybe he did know 100% that nobody was going to inherit the business and it had just shut down its doors forever. I believe that’s unlikely because he probably would have mentioned that in the book if he had.

Great principles, but leaves you wanting...
This book helps HVAC contractors realize the importance of great principles, systems, leadership and ideas with guidelines for future development. This book decides not to show the already developed and proven HVAC processes and systems that were created by the co-author that led to his success. Instead, it merely points you towards the path, so that you can create your own "wheel." Honestly, the reason why I bought the book was so that the wheel could be given to me and I could make it my own from that point forward. Buy this book if you want direction and inspiration, not a blueprint.

Pure Gold.
I'm following my father steps on the amazing hvac business and I was looking for how to take my company to the next level.
thanks to Michael Gerber, I can see more clear what is the path to follow in order to be successful in my field and for sure in any other business.
I highly recommend this book to any person who is thinking to start a business.

A more-than-once read.
As a contractor, I feel called out by the issue presented and impressed by the solutions and lessons given thereafter. There is valuable information with that will have to be listened to more than once to learn, and especially for an ADHD guy like me. Be sure to take notes, you'll be glad you did.
