Publisher's Summary

Guardians of the Galaxy meets The Hobbit in this rollicking fantasy adventure.

It's not easy to live in a world ruled by dragons. The taxes are high, and their control is complete. But for one group of bold misfits, it's time to band together and steal back some of that wealth.

No one said they were smart.

Chaotic, violent, and funny in a dark way.

"The Dragon Lords: Fool's Gold" is a humorously dark misadventure featuring five misfits; An unlucky farmer, a crazy drunk old man, two mercenaries; a psychotic lizardman and his sociopathic teammate (though she is trying to be better), and a scholar trying to overcome dark impulses triggered by magic.

By bizarre coincidence these five unhappy characters bump into each other one day and decide to risk everything and attempt to rob an evil dragon that rules the region. It's crazy, suicidal even, but greed and revenge trump common sense and they actually follow through. Of course, nothing goes right and bloody chaos happens in a horrifying / amusing domino effect that leaves a listener guessing what will happen next.

There is a lot of gallows humor, cursing, and descriptively gory bloodshed in this book, so if you were expecting some lighthearted quarky adventure story where a bunch of characters with a few quarks slowly learn to become better people by working together then, well, this is mostly not that. While it is funny in a dark way, lots of characters die in this book in horrible ways and the featured party of characters are comprised mostly of selfish rogues with obvious mental instability that pretty much stay that way throughout the story. Still, the over all effect is oddly entertaining.

The narrator, John Banks, does a good job bringing out the characters, their voices as individuals, and emotional attitudes for this audiobook. He also has a good range. The lizardman and crazy drunk old man voices are particularly impressive.

This book is recommended for those listeners who enjoy dark yet goofy humor as much as action packed gore in their fantasy stories. This book also ends on a satisfying conclusive note even though it has a sequel.

Ehh...

Story didn't capture me, characters didn't stand out, villains were lackluster... I finished it out of boredom more than a desire to read the ending. Middle of the road. Not Terrible, Not Great.

A must have audio

The worst part about this book, is the fact that I will have to wait for the next one to come out.

I didn't want to stop listening to this book. I wanted to call in sick at work and listen all day. I recommend this to anyone. Even if it's not your typical pick I think you would enjoy this one.
