Publisher's Summary

Thirty thousand years ago, ice was storming the planet. Among the species forced out of the trees and onto the steppes by the advancing cold was modern man, who was both predator and prey. No stranger to the experiences that make us human - a mother's love and a father's betrayal, tribal war and increasing famine, political intrigue and forbidden love, joy and hope and devastating loss - our ancestors competed for scant resources in a brutal landscape.

Mankind stood on the cold brink of extinction, but they had a unique advantage over other species, a new technology: domesticated wolves. Only a set of extraordinary circumstances could have transformed one of these fierce creatures into a hunting companion, a bodyguard, a soldier, and a friend.

W. Bruce Cameron's The Dog Master is an evocative glimpse of prehistory, an emotional coming-of-age saga, a thrilling tale of survival against all odds, and the exciting, imaginative story of the first dog.

Critic Reviews

"Interesting speculative history with a satisfying conclusion...." (Kirkus)

"Guiding listeners through three time periods and multiple early tribes of humans and wolf packs, narrator David Colacci keeps the momentum of the plot swift, the characters distinct, and the atmosphere rich." (AudioFile)

I am a dog lover so am biased but I loved this more than the 20+ audiobooks I have listened to so far. It is an artfully woven tale full of marvelous surprises.

Remember it is fiction - Listen to the last chapter first.

I really enjoyed this book. At first I found this story to drag a bit at the start and the articulate language and culture in a prehistoric drama somewhat incredulous, but then l found myself sitting in the car in the driveway not wanting to delay the story. If I had listened to the Afterward - first then it would have made much more sense.

Doggies!!!

Would you consider the audio edition of The Dog Master to be better than the print version?

The story got a bit mangled. The author moves around in time and tells the story from multiple perpectives. Great for a long car ride. Hard to follow if you only have 1 hour at a time.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Dog Master?

If you love animals you will love this book.

Have you listened to any of David Colacci’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Acceptable

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes, tears and laughter!!

Great Storytelling!

I sometimes had a little trouble keeping up with the rapid scene changes from one tribe to the next, etc, especially when my own pack of 7 dogs were noisy. However with rewind I could reorient myself. Loved the book!

Alternatively frustrating and boring

I wanted to love this book but it just dragged through the miseries of each character. I found the ceaselessly shifting point of view a challenge as well. It never gives you enough meat before pov shifts again. I gave up when it began to effect my moods.

The plot and themes were good, written poorly

While I enjoyed the plot, the actual writing was not up to the talk of the imagination of the author. He needs a good and harsh editor, as well more practice realizing his dreams in the written word.

If I hadn't liked the theme I would not have finished this book.

Jean Auel redux

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

It might be a little unfair, but Jean Auel wrote around 4000 pages on a similar story. Having read and loved 3 Camerons before, I felt he might have a new take. After the first half, I was wondering if I should send it back. It improved, and it was helpful to have the stories of several tribes (and the wolf family) unfolding at once. It's a great book if you haven't read Clan of the Cave Bear, decent if you have.

What does David Colacci bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He's a terrific narrator, who doesn't overact the book.

Could you see The Dog Master being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

No
