Publisher's Summary

From the terrifying case file that inspired the film The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It.

From this New York Times best-selling author comes a shocking case of demonic possession, exorcism, and murder starring the legendary demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren, who battled the Amityville Horror and whose real-life case files inspired The Conjuring Universe, which includes The Conjuring, Annabelle, and The Nun films.

It was one of the most sensational murder trials of the 1980s. When Arne Cheyenne Johnson stabbed an acquaintance to death with a five-inch folding knife, Johnson presented one of the most shocking legal defenses in history: not guilty by virtue of demonic possession. As the press put it, “the Devil made me do it”.

Johnson’s shocking story began months earlier, when his girlfriend’s 11-year-old brother, David, encountered a spectral figure looming at the foot of the bed and then started showing telltale signs of demonic possession. David suddenly spoke in Latin, levitated, and suffered beatings at the hands of an invisible demon. After a team of Catholic priests failed to drive the demon out, the case was taken up by Ed and Lorraine Warren. The Warrens had fought demons across the globe, but the Connecticut Devil would be one of their greatest challenges, and perhaps their most deadly.

Really?

After 6 chapters I returned this audio book. It was so lame and not scary at all. I only seldom listen to horror books and this one was laughable.

This book was WILD!

The Conjuring 3 should have just adapted the story straight from this book. It's got everything: a haunted house, a possessed kid, a whole bunch of demons described in vivid detail. There's even a part where someone PUNCHES a demon in the FACE! I really enjoyed this crazy story. Whether demons are real or not is irrelevant, this is the perfect audiobook to pop on for spooky vibes. 10/10 will be listening again in October.

So scary!

This story is so scary. I don’t think the movie quite does the horror justice, and the movie is scary too. I’m glad I read it, always want more details on these Warren stories.
The writing is not the greatest, too many clichés and overly dramatic descriptions. This story is so dramatic already, overblowing the mundane is absolutely unnecessary and detracts a bit from the flow.
The performance was good, though, and the actual story is riveting if alarming.

very good

this was a very interesting read. other books on the Warren's have been narrated better, but this did keep my attention. The set up of the book was great because I wanted to finish so I could know the whole story. I would recommend 👌

Loved every second of this one

Tim Campbell did an amazing job with this narration. A truly haunting tale that tells the back story of the possession that occurs in the beginning of the movie. Worth the time to listen 100%!

Interesting but LONG

Very interesting. I like how it was written in “case file” manor. It was very entertaining but then got long and repetitive.

Scary

I found it quite scary. Loved the narrator. Good book overall and a lot of swearing at some points that made me cringe a bit. Worth the listen.

What a story

When you read a story like this one that is claimed to be 100% true, it is truely fascinating. I don't personally believe in any of the this stuff but for someone to take it to the very extremes and claim it is 100% factual, it really makes you question yourself
