It will be no easy task to fill the shoes of a local legend like DCI Charlie Woodend, the newly promoted Monika Paniatowski tells herself – particularly when he’s still a very real presence in Whitebridge – but given a little time, she thinks she can grow into them.
Yet time is the one thing she does not have. On her first day in the new job, a severed female hand is discovered on the riverbank. And not only that, but the killer has already alerted the press. Only hours into the case, she find she can no longer trust her colleagues – or even herself – and the urge to pick up the phone and beg Woodend for help becomes almost irresistible.

The story is good with a nice pace, overall a well written book. The characters need a little fleshing out but thats about it. The author has the potential for a good series here. I'll be reading the next book soon.
Monika, the lead character is likable and not one of the typical female formula (acts like a man, dingbat, cold savant nymphomaniac). The male characters are a little more stereotypical, but the "good guys" aren't to emasculated.
Not a great book, enjoyable, an easy but entertaining listen with the hope of more.
Good potential
