Publisher's Summary

For Caleb Hicks, survival means hiding in plain sight.

Trained from a young age to be a super-soldier, he has worked hard to keep his abilities hidden. But after a disastrous mistake forces him into military service, hiding his skills becomes increasingly difficult. To maintain his cover, he isolates himself, rarely speaking and discussing his past with no one.

Until now.

After finding love in the wake of catastrophe, he will finally reveal the secrets of his childhood, his training, and the tragic events of his life following the Outbreak. Packed with intense action, thrills, and suspense, The Darkest Place is a harrowing tale of love, loss, and survival against all odds.

And ultimately, of the enduring power of hope.

Surviving the Dead series (in order):

  • No Easy Hope
  • This Shattered Land
  • Warrior Within

Great series

Liked the background story of Caleb Hicks. Guy Williams does a very good narration, so don't replace him!

Good Zombie Series

I'm an avid zombie fiction reader. Actually almost anything to do with any kind of an apocalypse. This is one of the better ones I've read.

Outstanding post apocalyptic story!!

Absolutely great book. Probably my favorite out of 150+ books I own. Different from the other books of this story but a great parallel.

side story about Caleb Hicks...

sometimes the narrator used the same voice from character to character making it easy to loose track of who was talking. not my favorite in this series.

Solid entry in the series.

Want sure what this book was about, but as it unfolded, I was at first a little dissapointed but I soon got over that.
Caleb telling his story from pre-breakout to his current situation was very entertaining.
Recommend this book.

Weakest yet unfortunately

I found it difficult to connect with the protagonist and that is critical to the success of the novel.

Why

This book gives a background character an actual back story, but its a story that was so boring and really unnecessary for the main story to continue. Yes there would be other characters from this story that pop up in the next couple of books but from where im up to in the series i dont need to know their back story. The story is pretty basic, predictable and long winded.
