Story
Raised to be a warrior, 17-year-old Eelyn fights alongside her Aska clansmen in an ancient rivalry against the Riki clan. Her life is brutal but simple: train to fight and fight to survive. Until the day she sees the impossible on the battlefield - her brother, fighting with the enemy - the brother she watched die five years ago. Eelyn loses her focus and is captured. Now, she must survive the winter in the mountains with the Riki, in a village where every neighbor is an enemy, every battle scar possibly one she delivered.

Story
Around the world, black handprints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky. In a dark and dusty shop, a devil's supply of human teeth grown dangerously low. And in the tangled lanes of Prague, a young art student is about to be caught up in a brutal otherwordly war. Meet Karou. She fills her sketchbooks with monsters that may or may not be real; she's prone to disappearing on mysterious "errands"; she speaks many languages - not all of them human; and her bright blue hair actually grows out of her head that color.

Publisher's Summary
Children can have a cruel, absolute sense of justice. Children can kill a monster and feel quite proud of themselves. A girl can look at her brother and believe they're destined to be a knight and a bard who battle evil. She can believe she's found the thing she's been made for.
Hazel lives with her brother, Ben, in the strange town of Fairfold where humans and fae exist side by side. The faeries' seemingly harmless magic attracts tourists, but Hazel knows how dangerous they can be, and she knows how to stop them. Or she did, once.
At the center of it all, there is a glass coffin in the woods. It rests right on the ground and in it sleeps a boy with horns on his head and ears as pointy as knives. Hazel and Ben were both in love with him as children. The boy has slept there for generations, never waking.
Until one day, he does...
As the world turns upside down and a hero is needed to save them all, Hazel tries to remember her years spent pretending to be a knight. But swept up in new love, shifting loyalties, and the fresh sting of betrayal, will it be enough?

Another Perfect Adaptation of Classic Fairytales
Holly Black has, from her first book, been a master at weaving classic fairytale (the truly classic kind, not the Disney retellings many of us grew up with) into stories set in the Modern age. she doesn't create a new world so much as tease the reader with the idea that, right at the edge of the reality we know, lurks a world of magic and ancient beings that has always been there. My boyfriend and I listened to this audio book last week on a road trip. He is not a fan of audio books but agreed to try one while it was my turn to drive, and chose this from my collection almost at random. He's never read a Holly Black novel, but this book has converted him, to both wanting to read her other books and to wanting to give audio books a try in the future. We did not finish the book during drive but he insisted we finish before the whole trip was over, choosing this book over his podcasts or movies. He was absolutely hooked until the very end. The story is delightfully dark, a tale of family and love and the bonds those create, but without ever feeling heavy. All the characters are complex, with goals and flaws and pasts that have made them who they are and shape the choices they make as the story unfolds. The Narrator brings out every emotion and nuance in the characters, not just reading the lines but acting them out. Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a good adventure, who wants to believe that there is magic all around but just out of sight, and who is ok with knowing that fairies may have wings and may sparkle but also probably may bite.

Holly Black does it again
A dark tale with a fast moving storyline. The pieces of the puzzle are all there for you to put them together, but will you? Lauren Fortgang does a great job as a reader and most of her character voices are fitting. Mostly. I really appreciate a stand alone fantasy tale that leaves me sated just as much as most trilogies do.
