Publisher's Summary

He is darkness. She wants him dead. In a city starved of light, she might just succeed. She moves like a shadow; she kills silently: Raven.

This elegant assassin has been on the run for years. This time, though, she has picked the wrong target.

The hitman known only as 'Victor' is as paranoid as he is merciless and is no stranger to being hunted. He tracks his would-be killer across the globe, aiming not only to neutralise the threat but to discover who wants him dead.

The trail leads to New York...and then the lights go out. Over 12 hours of unremitting darkness, Manhattan dissolves into chaos. Amid looting, conspiracy and blackout, Victor and Raven play a vicious game of cat and mouse that the city will never forget.

Who is Victor?

I've listened to all the books and enjoyed them all. This one, however, seemed too forced. The plot was thin, the coincidences and cliches too typical. The car chases and pursuits turned into sagas rather than page turners. I also lost focus on who Victor is. Whatever his moral compass, it seems wayward in this book.

Disappointing

I've been enthralled by previous books in this series. This one was quite hard-going. No particular story except Victor's & Raven's survival. Guess I don't enjoy simply he kills, she kills, they kill! A pity because I've really enjoyed the earlier books. Not sure I'll bother with any more.

Sorry but Victor's lost his edge!

Victor has to do much better. Very predictable, slow moving and far too much unnecessary detail, particularly during his fights.
Lacks good content.

Great story with fantastic narration

Another great instalment of the series, brought to life perfectly by the excellent narration of Daniel Philpott. Looking forward to the next book, fingers crossed with the same narrator!

Fast Paced Thriller

I've really started to like Tom Wood's Victor the assassin books with 'Better off Dead' being a real highlight for me. Although this is not the best in the series in my opinion, the author has still worked up a solid thriller. If you have enjoyed any of Tom Wood's earlier works, this will no doubt be a welcome addition to your library.

Fantastic

I loved the fact 'Victor' got to work with someone else and the story line was left open so 'Ravan' could return
The book as usual was brilliantly written and narrated, do not ever use anyone else but Daniel to read your books
Can't wait for his next book which I'm sure will be a long wait but well worth it
LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT

Another great Victor adventure

The usual detail, pace and cold-blooded murder from one of the best out there. Victor finds himself with a partner and this brings a new dimension to the character. I enjoyed the pace and this and as usual, the audio book was delivered exceptionally.

Not the best of the Victor the Assassin books

I've really enjoyed this series, but this last one seemed to get lost at times. The chase in New York went on for too long and all seemed a bit farcical with police and other agents appearing to intercept the couple at every turn. Manhattan is a big place!
On balance though, Tom Woods character is very believable and a brought to life by Daniel Philpott who does a great job.

Not Tom Wood's best effort

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

This would have been a 4 or 5 star listening experience if it hadn't been so boring. It was short on plot and never ending in physical fight descriptions. One after the other, fight this person, run, fight the next person, run. So boring.

What was most disappointing about Tom Wood’s story?

No real story, just one long series of small battles over described one after the other.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

No real story, just boring descriptions of hand to hand fights.

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

No.

Any additional comments?

I've bought the next book in the series. If it's the same boring style I won't bother with Tom Wood again. It's like a computer wrote this book.

Enjoyable but not the best in the series

Would you recommend The Darkest Day to your friends? Why or why not?

It wouldn't be my first recommendation. The earlier books in the "Victor" series are better in my opinion.

Any additional comments?

I'm not sure whether a) I've just become a little desensitised to the format as this is the 5th, or b) whether the prolonged journey/chase in NY was just too long (too big a proportion of the whole storyline) but for whatever reason I did not find this one as enjoyable as the earlier books in the series. It's not a bad book ... but I wouldn't give it the very high ratings of the earlier ones.

Once again, Philpott does an excellent job with the narration.

The chase was interminable!

Would you be willing to try another book from Tom Wood? Why or why not?

Yes - I've enjoyed the full series of Victor the Assassin.

What about Daniel Philpott’s performance did you like?

Well paced to suit the twists and turns of the story.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No.

Any additional comments?

The many chapters covering the chase seemed to blend into one another.
