Publisher's summary

The second book in a new trilogy from Joseph Delaney, the author of the internationally best-selling Last Apprentice series.

Tom Ward is now spook of the county, and with his apprentice, Jenny, he continues the fight against boggarts, witches, and terrifying new creatures of the dark. Together with the witch assassin Grimalkin, Tom and Jenny lead an army into battle against a dangerous enemy - but it all goes catastrophically wrong.

The situation seems hopeless until Alice - Tom's lost love and a powerful witch - appears. But Alice had turned to the dark: Can Tom trust her now?

Joseph Delaney's deliciously scary imagination continues Tom's saga, introducing new listeners to the struggle against the encroaching dark and taking longtime fans back to familiar settings, where they will find old friends - and old enemies.

Perfect for every listener who loves thrills, chills, action, and adventure - no prior knowledge of the Last Apprentice series is necessary!

Regarding Narrator

What did you love best about The Dark Army?

I understand about the new narrators. No, they are not as good as Christopher Evan Welch. Sadly, Mr. Welch died due to complications of cancer on December 2, 2013.

Challenging

I struggled to finish this one after multiple attempts. I don't know how to explain it but the best I can say is wordy and over explained. I love the Apprentice series but this one felt like listening to a dictionaries of people and their agendas and the story felt all over the place. It may be me and I will attempt to listen again but for some reason I couldn't get hooked. By the end of the book I still feel as if I only know a fraction of the story line with holes and blanks that didn't sink in. Like reading a boring text book for a research paper. You can read the same paragraph multiple times and still be clueless as to what was truly said. Has sections that are awesome and captivating but lags in between losing my attention. I prefer the previous reader as well. I got lost listening to multiple new voices after being so use to my usual reader from the Apprentice series. I could no longer identify the characters by voice which felt strange to me. I felt a personal connection to my characters voices. I lost that connection through new voices in this book.

The Dark Army

I enjoyed this story a lot. The glossary at the end was not needed though. I’d have bought a 7 hour version. That out of the way, this book is a lot of fun...and the ending.

Tom needs to step his game up

This is a really good series but Tom is so dependent on the dark to save him all the time, it's getting very old. I was about to call this my last book of the series but the author has done enough to give the series one more chance.

Good story, frustrating voice

Definitely a great performance but not the best voice to choose for the characters. The perspectives are interesting, but the woman’s voice doing Tom sounds strained. Not to be overly critical because an overall great performance, just slightly frustrating. You will still enjoy

Great Story - decent narration

Would you listen to The Dark Army again? Why?

No one time through is enough I rarely re-listen to books.

What did you like best about this story?

The continuation of the story of Tom Ward post death and what happened to Alice and Jenny etc.. can't wait for the next one in the series

Which scene was your favorite?

The creativity of using the boggart in the way that tom does and also the continued closeness he comes to death and how he's saved is pretty amazing.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes

Any additional comments?

While the story was great I find that while I tolerate it I'm not a huge fan of doing the 2 narrator thing it's a bit confusing.. I would rather have either one reader host all the voices or at the least have one reader host the male voice and the other host the female voices not intertwine them so just as you get used to hearing say Toms voice from the Male reader suddenly it shifts to Jenny's' perspective and now you're hearing Toms voice from the female reader.. but the story is good enough that you can tolerate it.. I just hope that this changes for future readings... please pick one.. either each do their part or just have one

Great Story! I can't wait for the next!

There better be a next! The Dark Army continues Tom's struggle against the dark and sees many old friends return. We can only hope Mr. Delaney hasn't tired of Tom's story because at least one more chapter MUST be told!

BRING BACK CHRISTOPHER EVANS WELCH! All these other readers collectively pale in comparison to Mr.
Welch's ability to bring the characters to life.

Terrible narrator

This book struggle because it needs better narrators. I expected more, also a 45 minute glossary in a 8 hour book doesn't do it for me.
