Publisher's Summary

Finding himself the man of the family, London dancing master Alec Valcourt moves his mother and sister to remote Devonshire, hoping to start over. But he is stunned to learn the village matriarch has prohibited all dancing, for reasons buried deep in her past. Alec finds an unlikely ally in the matriarch's daughter. Though he's initially wary of Julia Midwinter's reckless flirtation, he comes to realize her bold exterior disguises a vulnerable soul - and hidden sorrows of her own. Julia is quickly attracted to the handsome dancing master - a man her mother would never approve of - but she cannot imagine why Mr. Valcourt would leave London, or why he evades questions about his past. With Alec's help, can Julia uncover old secrets and restore life to her somber village...and to her mother's tattered heart? Filled with mystery and romance, The Dancing Master brings to life the intriguing profession of those who taught essential social graces for ladies and gentlemen hoping to make a "good match" in Regency England.

wonderfully narrated

I got so caught up with the story narrated so beautifully by the British accented narrator. I loved it and I highly recommend it.

Too Slow

Honestly, I love Julie Klassen's books, however, this book got off to such a slow beginning that I have never finished it. Sorry. I shouldn't write a review on something I haven't completed, but I didn't think the beginnings of this plot held up to what I expect from the author. I would recommend every Klassen book I've read or listened to before this one -- but would suggest a different title if you want a more gripping storyline.

Very slow start, excellent ending

I admit for the first 6 hours the only thing that kept me going was loyalty to Julie Klassen and believing her books are always great. Finally when 8 hours were left, the book became very interesting. The secrets began to reveal themselves and the characters began to change. As a mother I could identify with the mom and as someone who has been a teenager in the past, I could identify with the heroine. The book ended beautifully and I am glad I did not give up.
The narrator was excellent as well but somehow she did not finish the narration. Someone else did the last chapter and it was disappointing. Almost like a surgeon who does all the work and then hands off the final suturing to the nurse and walks away. Strange but that’s how the book ended.

Good Story but Weak Ending

Because of a family scandal, Alec Valcourt leaves London and moves his mother and sister in with his uncle in a small village in Devonshire. He’d planned to reopen a dance studio there but is shocked to learn dancing isn’t allowed. As he meets both friends and foes, mysteries are unraveled, relationships revealed, and lives changed. As truths come to light, will it be enough to restore joy, grace, and love in the community?

This was a captivating story, although it had too much detail in places, which made it longer than it needed to be. In addition, I was disappointed with the ending. It would have been better if it had not been just told and we were shown what happened between the main characters. I gave it 4.5, which rounded up to a five.

Clean romance

good story that is clean. romantic but not descriptive. The story builds nicely and leaves you with several surprises that tie things together nicely.
