Story
Myranda Celeste is a young woman more interested in staying alive than being a hero. Orphaned by a continent-spanning war that has gone on for decades too long and shunned for failing to support it, she has been on the move since she was only a child. One can hardly blame her when she thinks that the chance discovery of a fallen soldier's priceless cargo is the moment that will change her life. No one could predict just how great that change would be. It will lead her through an adventure of rebels and generals, of wizards and warriors, and of beasts both noble and monstrous.

Keras Selyrian is already well on the way to cutting his name into the annals of legend. He’s fought false divinities, thieving sorcerers, and corrupt demigods - and left them defeated in his wake. But he’s a long way from home, and Kaldwyn offers a different brand of danger than he’s used to. He’s already got a sword of unfathomable power, but it’s damaged and leaking world-annihilating mana, so he’s in the market for a new one. Possibly six. The more the better, really.

Story
Long ago, the world fell into twilight, when the great empires of old consumed each other in sorcerous cataclysms. In the south, the Star Towers fell, swallowed by the sea, while the black glaciers descended upon the northern holdfasts, entombing the cities of Min-Ceruth in ice and sorcery. Then from the ancient empire of Menekar, the paladins of Ama came, putting every surviving sorcerer to the sword and cleansing their taint from the land. The pulse of magic slowed, fading like the heartbeat of a dying man. But after a thousand years, it has begun to quicken again.

Publisher's Summary
It has been months since the Chosen finally defeated the D'Karon and the Perpetual War came to an end. Once warriors, Myranda, Deacon, Ivy, and Ether must now take on the role of diplomats in the ongoing task of preserving the unsteady peace between the lands of Tressor and the Northern Alliance. Generations of war have left a deep distrust between the people on both sides of the border, and any sign of treachery or hostility could cause a new war to flare. If that happens, the weakened Northern Alliance will have little hope to survive against the military might of their neighbor to the south.
A mysterious figure, long slumbering and forgotten, has stirred in the wake of the Chosen triumph. She is not pleased to find the D'Karon no longer answer her calls, and she sets out to find them once more. This woman, a powerful necromancer with deep knowledge of D'Karon magic and little concern for the world and its people, spreads chaos wherever she goes. Her bloody swath through the southern lands is just the spark the volatile world needs to take to flame once more.
To keep their lands from descending back into a war that will claim the lives of untold thousands, Myranda, Deacon, and Myn must venture into the heart of Tressor. Escorted by a Dragon Rider named Grustim and surrounded by fear and distrust, the road ahead will not be difficult, but the chosen have fought too hard and lost too much to lose it all to this dark apprentice.

Slow start, nice finish
I had read the first books in the series years ago in e-book format, so I was excited to see this book on Audible. Overall, it was a pretty good read. I had trouble adjusting to the narrator at first. She did some voices pretty well, but the Deacon voice was not very good for her. I was pretty disappointed with Deacon's character in this book. He came off as flat and one dimensional. In the first set of books, his character was much better developed. With Ether's voice, I kept visualizing 7 of 9 from the Deep Space Star Trek series.
Ivy was my favorite character and the author did the best job with her as far as character development. The storyline progressed nicely, though the start was kind of slow. I'm looking forward to the next installment. It's not the best book I've ever heard on Audible, but it is well worth the credit.

a new edition
I loved the original trilogy (read them in one weekend) so when I discovered that a fourth had been written I was ecstatic. It's not as well written as the original three, but it's a great addition. hopefully they'll be more, Lallo is a fantastic writer and I look forward to seeing more of what he'll produce.
the narrator did an good job. the only real complaint I have is about her accents, and that's just a matter of personal preference. honestly she did a pretty good job.
