It is 1906, and in New York City, the Italian crime group known as the Black Hand is on a spree: kidnapping, extortion, arson. Detective Isaac Bell of the Van Dorn Agency is hired to form a special Black Hand Squad, but the gangsters appear to be everywhere - so much so that Bell begins to wonder if there are imitators, criminals using the name for the terror effect. And then the murders begin, each one of a man more powerful than the last, and, as Bell discovers to his dismay, the ultimate target may be the most powerful man of all.

Publisher's Summary
Isaac Bell may be on the hunt for the greatest monster of all time in the newest action-adventure novel from the New York Times best-selling author.
The year is 1911. Chief Investigator Isaac Bell of the Van Dorn Detective Agency has had many extraordinary cases before. But none quite like this.
Hired to find a young woman named Anna Pape who ran away from home to become an actress, Bell gets a shock when her murdered body turns up instead. Vowing to bring the killer to justice, he begins a manhunt that leads him into increasingly more alarming territory. Anna Pape was not alone in her fate - petite young blond women like Anna are being murdered in cities across America. And the pattern goes beyond the physical resemblance of the victims - there are disturbing familiarities about the killings themselves that send a chill through even a man as experienced with evil as Bell. If he is right about his fears, then he is on the trail of one of the greatest monsters of his time.

These Isaac Bell books are great
Seriously, have yet to be disappointed in the Isaac Bell series. I think this one, The Cutthroat, may be the best yet. Fast pacing. Good consistent characters. Strong plot, but not obvious who the villain is. Good clues that come along just when you need them. And Scott Brick as the reader. This book suits Brick to an absolute T. Magnificent job, Mr. Brick! Can't wait till the next Isaac Bell book comes out.

My first book from this author and it's a nice change of pace, I don't read or listen a lot from the early 1900s. Cussler takes an old unsolved mystery and puts an interesting ending to it. I was entertained.

There's a lot to like with this suspense thriller!
Suspense Is increased virtually constantly until it becomes extreme. Isaac Bell and his wife are strong and likable characters. Except for violence the novel is family friendly (no cursing or sex) which is unusual for a suspense thriller. The cuttthroat character ls literally evil and of course in the end good wins over evil in this novel. Mostly this novel draws the listener's interest and keeps it; I enjoyed The Cutthroat!
It is a good thing, however, that plot credibility is not a valid test for a novel as it is for non-fiction. In this 1910 setting it seems the cutthroat is actually Jack the Ripper who last killed in London 22 years earlier. That is fine for a novel in a way that it is not for such supposedly non-fiction like Patricia Cornwell's recently non-credible re-released RIPPER.
One of the best aspects of The Cutthroat is the superb narration by Scott Brick.
