Acerca de esta escucha
Winner of the World Fantasy, Edgar Allan Poe, Ellery Queen, Locus and British Fantasy Awards, Manly Wade Wellman is considered one of the greatest fantasy writers who ever lived and is one of the creators of the great Weird Tales tradition.
An eerie tale of the American Civil War, and the uncanny evil being who called himself Persil Mandifer, and his lovely daughter, Enid, a tale of dark powers and weird happenings. The year is 1862, the place the Deep South. Enid Mandifer has been sent hypnotized by her stepfather, Persil Mandifer, to be a sacrifice to the Nameless One, a demonic presence who haunts an ancient house under the shadow of a natural pillar called Fearful Rock. Kane Lanark, a Lieutenant in the Union cavalry, who has been ordered to scout for Quantrill's infamous raiders, discovers Enid in a half-dazed condition on the trail to Fearful Rock. Kane is puzzled and repelled when he learns of her stepfather's strange worship.
Sergeant Jager, a religious fanatic known as "Bible" Jager to the other soldiers in their troop, and Kane's assistant, finds a horned image in the cellar of the house at Fearful Rock and destroys it, earning Persil Mandifer's undying hatred and his curse. After the Civil war, cosmic forces reunite all four at the foot of Fearful Rock, where the dead rise and events reach an eerie, shattering climax.
In the sequel, Coven, set several years later, Cole Wickett, a former Southern officer, who has lost everything in the war and become a tramp, drifts toward a small community he has heard of called now called Welcome Rock, where a minister named Jager preaches to all who seek refuge. There Wickett and Jager battle a coven of evil witches pledged to the devil, and find themselves opposed to dark beings wielding unimaginable powers. Forces only the spells from a strange book called "Long Lost Friend" can possibly defeat. If Wickett and Jager can survive long enough to use it.

The Necronomicon was not the first book by H.P. Lovecraft to terrify readers with tales of dark and twisted horrors from beyond. No, the Al-Azif, or Book of the Insect, is the first work that told mankind of Cthulhu, Azathoth, and other terrors. Indeed, it was the book that inspired "The Mad Arab" Abdul Al-Hazred to write its more famous successor.

You've never met a ghost hunter or demon slayer like John Thunstone. Defying the naysayers' vision of a pale basement-dwelling hobbyist, Thunstone is tall, broad-shouldered, athletic, and handsome. He likes to spend his evenings in nightclubs, holding court and charming women. But does he lack focus? No! Thunstone is also a serious scholar, deeply studied in the occult and dark arts, and he carries a blade of silver inscribed with the motto sic pereant omnes inimici tui, forged by Saint Dunstan, patron saint of silversmiths, and one of the few men the Devil himself feared.

This audiobook collects Wellman’s John Thunstone and Lee Corbet stories, written between 1943 and 1979. These stories combine the mystical and horrific with traditional Southern folk tales and legends. These stories also reveal a post-World War II modernism that make them much more then pulp romanticism. The paranoia and cynicism of modern weird icons, such as The X-files, may well have had their genesis in the pulp musings of Manly Wade Wellman.

The thrill-a-minute stories the writers of the original movie, The Mummy, with Boris Karloff, and its many sequels and remakes, used for research. Fans of those films will find the origins of: the scene in which the sacred formula for eternal life is secreted in the base of a statue of Isis; as well as the scenes in which mummies are brought back to life by burning a rare Egyptian herb; where a modern woman, who is the reincarnation of an ancient Egyptian princess, begins to turn into a mummy herself; where mummies can only be truly destroyed by fire; and many others

Union soldier John Chenneville suffered a traumatic head wound in battle. His recovery took the better part of a year as he struggled to regain his senses and mobility. By the time he returned home, the Civil War was over, but tragedy awaited. John’s beloved sister and her family had been brutally murdered. Their killer goes by many names. He fought for the North in the late unpleasantness, and wore a badge in the name of the law. But the man John knows as A. J. Dodd is little more than a rabid animal, slaughtering without reason or remorse, needing to be put down.

It's the Arizona Territory. The year, 1848. The year the Mexican War ended. Fate and blazing pistols have just thrown together reporter and part-time drunk Marion T. Bell and the very nearly legendary John Charles Hart, mustanger and scout, in the Little Fanny Saloon. Plying the river-trade across the Colorado to the gold fields of California in the north, and war-torn Mexico to the south, the town of Gable's Ferry has sprung up overnight-lacking only a church, a schoolhouse and a jail.

This would Beguile Joesy Wales
Well, I reckon I've just finished listenin' to a tale that'd make even the fiercest outlaw pause and ponder. The audiobook, "The Curse of Fearful Rock: The Complete Battles of Sergeant 'Bible' Jaeger Against the Forces of Darkness" by Manly Wade Wellman, narrated by Allen Grunerud, is a wild ride through the shadows of the American Civil War, with a side dish of supernatural evil that'd make a man's blood run cold.
Now, let me tell ya, this ain't your ordinary yarn about the war between the North and the South. This here's a tale of dark powers, strange happenin's, and a whole mess of eerie goings-on that'll make the hair on your neck stand up straighter than a sentry at attention. The year's 1862, and the Deep South's the setting, where a hypnotized gal named Enid Mandifer finds herself tangled in the clutches of Persil Mandifer, a man who's got more deviltry in him than a rattlesnake's got venom.
Enter Kane Lanark, a Union cavalry Lieutenant with a nose for trouble. He stumbles upon Enid, half-dazed and trail-weary, headin' towards the ominous Fearful Rock. But that ain't all, partner. There's Sergeant Jager, a religious zealot known as "Bible" Jager to his compadres, and Kane's right-hand man. These two fellas stumble onto some dark doin's, with a horned image and a whole heap of cursed business that'd make the devil himself look twice.
Now, let me tell ya, the sequel ain't no walk in the park either. "Coven" takes us a few years down the road, with Cole Wickett, a former Southern officer turned tramp, headin' into a town called Welcome Rock. But there ain't no welcome mat laid out for him, 'cause there's a preacher named Jager battlin' against wicked witches and dark forces that'd give a grizzly bear a run for its money. They're wieldin' powers that'd give nightmares a case of the shivers, and the only thing standin' between 'em and a whole lotta chaos is a book called "Long Lost Friend." If Cole and Jager can live long enough to use it, that is.
*Spits* Now, I gotta say, this audiobook's a spellbinder, a true page-turner for the ears. It's got more twists and turns than a backwoods trail, and the narrator, Allen Grunerud, he's got a voice that's as smooth as a moonlit river and as gritty as sandpaper. It's got the kind of macabre and horror that'd make the Devil himself take a step back, and I reckon it's got more spine-tinglin' suspense than a standoff at high noon.
And listen here, folks, this audiobook's got more punch than a Texas tornado, and it's got a grip on your senses tighter than a gambler's grip on his last silver dollar. So, if you're lookin' for a tale that'll make your heart race and your hair stand on end, "The Curse of Fearful Rock" is the one to put in your saddlebag. And let me tell ya, it's got more kick than a mule with a burr under its saddle. This here's one for the ages, partner, and if you're lookin' to get beguiled, well, just take a listen to the mesmerizin' words of Manly Wade Wellman and the voice of Allen Grunerud. You won't be disappointed, I guarantee ya that.

Impressive
This book was very unique and masterfully written. The stories are impressive and different from anything else I have heard or read about the Civil War Era. The stories are unique and well written, and the narrative brings it home. This is my honest review that I am leaving here voluntarily.

Interesting Premise but Lackluster Execution
I received this book for free. I am voluntarily leaving this review and all opinions expressed herein are mine.
I don't like leaving negative reviews but, while I liked the premise of this story, I found the execution to be dry, lifeless and less than thrilling.
The narrator did a good job.
