Publisher's summary

Magic is against the law. He must use it anyway.

The Crow King has outlawed magic. Despite the kingdom's edict, Gwyn plunges into the ancient and deadly True Wood to find a magical cure for his dying brother. Within the shadowed realm, he must fend off more than violent and fallen fae - like Ilidreth - when he learns the king is out to stop him at whatever cost.

On his desperate quest, he is joined by a unicorn, a quirky girl, and the maddest of the fallen fae. Together they must outrun enchanted crows and enemy armies, and face the ghosts of a shattered age, all while racing to save Gwyn’s brother. Meanwhile, war brews between countries, and a secret order of mages hunts Gwyn down.

Yet none of this can prepare Gwyn for the harrowing truth behind the fall of the Ilidreth long, long ago, and what it means for his life and his homeland.

The ultimate brotherly love tale

This is a great story on how far one will go for a family member that they love. Filled with magic and adventure this will keep you fully invested throughout the entire book. It kept a very good pace and also the narrator's voices were great.

Great Performance! Slightly Rushed Pacing.

Overall, a great story, wonderfully performed! This audiobook version brought such life and personality to the characters. I wish it could've been spread out over more books, though. The big time jump was pretty jarring. I would've loved to have experienced more of Gwynn training and working toward rebellion, or Kive and Nathaera's adventures in Freylin. It felt like I missed a lot. This is such an interesting and magical world that I want to know more about it. I can't wait to hear the next book!

A Grand Mix of Old and New

This story was an excellent tale, bits of old and new mixed together in a well-paced story. I could see vividly the world and the characters. I felt like Woodscourt’s character work was her strongpoint and that every one of them felt unique and well-developed. I loved the Arthurian feels and harkening to tales of times long gone, along with modernized feelings and viewpoints.
